WHEELING — For the second time this week, the Wheeling Park and Buckhannon-Upshur tennis teams faced off. The location was different — playing in Wheeling this time — but the results were the same Thursday as the teams split with Park’s girls winning 7-0 and BU’s boys prevailing 4-3.
The clean sweep moved Park’s girls to 4-0 on the young season. No. 1 singles player Taylor Broadwater led the team with another impressive showing, defeating Tori Adams 8-0.
“She brings a really good competitive spirit to the team,” said Park girls coach Chalmer Moffett. “She brings kind of a different element where she hates losing even individual points. She’s trying to win every single point the whole match, which is something that’s good, especially coming from our No. 1 seed.”
The Patriots also took the top-flight match on the boys’ side as Braeden Keen gutted out a tough victory over Aden Pitts, 8-5.
“One thing about Braeden is that he’s always good at showing emotion,” said Park boys coach Tim Ickes. “That’s part of his game — being loud, talking to himself, being emotional — it kind of helps him stay focused and stay competitive, no matter what the score might be. That was a typical Braeden Keen match, a battle back and forth and he guts it out at the end.”
Towne Moores (8-0) and Kayla Clatterbuck (8-1) also scored convincing wins on the girls’ side, while sophomore Taylor Andrews found herself in a battle in No. 3 singles.
Playing Buckhannon’s Madelyn Frye, Andrews put on a superb second-half effort to tough out a come-from-behind victory.
“I was super proud of Taylor Andrews today,” Moffett said. “She was actually down in the middle of her match and ended up winning three or four games in a row to finish it out. I’m super proud of how she stayed strong and finished the second half of her match really well.
“Last year she was our alternate as a freshman. She’s worked really hard and got so much better in the offseason.”
In doubles action, Broadwater and Moore won 8-1, Andrews and Clatterbuck won 8-1 and twins Harper and Reese Moore triumphed 8-1.
On the boys’ side, Wyatt Andrews dropped a hard-fought match to Caden Andrick, 8-2, in No. 2 singles and Evan Stingle fell 8-0 in No. 4.
Again, it was the No. 3 singles match that came down to the wire, as sophomore Nick Trischler avenged a loss from earlier this week and defeated Mauricio Menendez 8-5.
Ickes said Trischler learned a lot from that loss on Monday. Tuesday at John Marshall, Trischler was able to apply what he learned to dig out of a 6-1 hole and win his match 8-6. Again Thursday, Trishler used those lessons to bag the victory.
“He lost to them on Monday and he couldn’t change up his pace,” Ickes explained. “Then on Tuesday at (John Marshall), he was able to change up pace and came back to beat that kid. That was a big turning point for him and (Thursday), it showed. It was a nice growing point Tuesday and it kind of showed (Thursday).”
For doubles, Keen and Andrews lost 8-4, Trischler and Grant Kenamond fell 8-3 and Stingle and Charlie Desaia won 8-1.
Park will not travel to George Washington this weekend as originally scheduled and will instead be back in action Monday hosting St. Clairsville. The Patriots will stay home and welcome Brooke to town Tuesday.
