Patriots Plate Four in Ninth to Hold Off Morgantown
MORGANTOWN — Morgantown tied the game with three runs in the seventh and nearly did it again with another three-spot in the ninth, but the Wheeling Park softball team did just enough to hang on for a 7-6 extra-inning victory.
The Patriots scored three runs in the top of the third as Lauren Nolte, Faith Randolph and Fayth Kozlowski all drove in runs. Park held that 3-0 lead all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning, when homesteading Morgantown finally strung some offense together. The Mohigans pushed three runs across to tie the game, the last run coming off the bat of Breonna Mariette.
Park pitcher Makenna Kelly limited the damage to just three runs in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Following a scoreless eighth, the Patriots plated four runs thanks to a couple of Morgantown errors.
After already orchestrating one late-inning comeback, the Mohigans looked to do it again as Marietta blasted a two-run home run and Morgantown added a third one batter later to make the game 7-6.
That was as close as Morgantown would get, however, as Wheeling Park hung on for the victory.
For Park, Mary Derrow had two singles and an RBI, Kozlowski and Shelby Crow both had RBi singles and Nolte had a single and two RBI.
Kelly pitched the first five innings and the last three to get the win.
Oak Glen 18, Brooke 0
WELLSBURG — The Golden Bears plated nine runs in the top of the first on their way to an 18-0, mercy-rule shortened victory over Brooke in four innings. The Golden Bears, now 8-0, collected 13 hits and drew 10 walks in the contest.
Maddie McKay, who got the win in the circle and scored three times, had a two-run single in the first, as did Sarah Brown, while Lizzie Kell, Olivia Munoz, Grace Smith and Sydney Brown also recorded RBIs in the onslaught.
To go with her strong showing at the plate, McKay fanned eight — including the first four she faced — while walking three and holding the Bruins (3-2) to just three hits.
Wheeling Central 11
Tyler Consolidated 3
SISTERSVILLE — A seven-run second inning gave the Maroon Knights the boost they needed to coast to an 11-3 win on the road at Tyler.
Taylor Knollinger crushed a home run and smacked a single to lead Central on offense. Josann Frizzell had two hits, a single and double, while Jocelyn Shaw had a double and Trina Baker collected a trio of singles.
Frizell continued a strong season in the circle, striking out 11.
Briann Templeton had a career day at the plate for Tyler, with a home run and three singles.
Martins Ferry 13, Bellaire 2
ST. JOE – Martins Ferry improved to 2-0 in softball action Wednesday with a 13-2 triumph over Bellaire on the Middle School diamond.
The Purple Riders banged out 16 hits as Taylor Bell led the way with a trio of singles. Kaylynn Zinn drove in three runs with a single and triple, while Eve Agnew singled and doubled to produce two tallies. Sydney Koller singled in two runs. Danielle Lude had an RBI double. Hunter Pollock and Allarah Jones each plated a run with a single.
Kelsi Gillespie went the distance inside the circle with six strikeouts and zero walks. She scattered five hits.
Barnesville 15, Shadyside 7
AT SHADYSIDE, the Shamrocks are also 2-0 after their road win over the Tigers.
Ellie Thompson singled three times and drove in a run to lead Barnesville’s 12-hit attack. Winning pitcher Tessa Johnson helped herself at the plate with a single, double and two RBI. Savanna Robinson belted a two-run single.
Johnson logged four strikeouts before giving way to Jasmine Caldwell in the sixth. Caldwell fanned three.
Gentry Brown had a big game for the Tigers with two home runs and three runs batted in. Rylie Fulton had two singles and a double while Taylor Fulton and Mckenzie Zdunczyk evenly divided four singles and two RBI.
Harrison Central 10, Buckeye Local 1
AT CONNORVILLE, the Huskies scored five times in the top of the second and never looked back in keeping the Panthers (0-2) winless.
Beallsville 11, Paden City 3
AT PADEN CITY, the Blue Devils scored in six of the seven innings en route to their road victory over the Wildcats.
Hannah Phillips doubled twice and drove in two runs for Beallsville. Kaylee Hagan singled twice and plated three runs and Kinley Hughes drove in two runs with a single and triple. Hallie Bommer had two singles and a like number of runs batted in.
BASEBALL
Cameron 3, Hundred 1
HUNDRED — The Dragons won a pitcher’s duel for the ages, as Adam and Coy Angel combined for a no-hitter to out-perform a one-run masterpiece by Hundred’s Chrisitan Fluharty.
Coy Angel got the start and struck out 15 Hornets in six innings of work before Adam Angel closed the game out by striking out the side in the seventh.
Meanwhile, Fluharty allowed just three runs on four hits while racking up 13 punchouts of his own.
Hundred led 1-0 after manufacturing a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Cameron pulled even in the fifth on a home run by Isaac Ball. In the top of the seventh, a two-run single by Nathan Haeberle put the Dragons up 3-1.
John Marshall 7, Central Crossing 3
GLEN DALE — Before Central Crossing played Wheeling Central later in the day, the Comets fell to John Marshall 7-3 in the early afternoon.
The Sobutka twins, Braden and Brennan, powered the Monarch to victory, combining for two singles, a double and three RBI. Chase Kerns and Luke Cramer had one RBI each. Dillon Wright got the win on the mound, tossing 5 2/3 innings while allowing three runs and striking out nine.
Tyler Consolidated 16, Magnolia 0
NEW MARTINSVILLE — Tyler scored 11 runs in a massive second inning to defeat Magnolia in a mercy-rule shortened five inning game.
Catcher Zade Billings hit a three-run triple and Hayden Brown had a two-run single during the onslaught. As a team, the Knights drew 17 walks against just four hits. Brown also got the win on the mound, pitching two innings of one-hit ball.
Drake Kocher and Landon Street tallied singles for the Blue Eagles.
Barnesville 5, Buckeye Local 0
CONNORVILLE — The Shamrocks opened the 2022 campaign by blanking homestanding Buckeye Local, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at sun-splashed Bill Mazeroski Field.
Kyvan Johnson worked the first five innings on the hill for the Shamrocks. He was impressive, striking out eight, walking just one while yielding just two hits.
Duker Castello had two singles and an RBI for the victors while Logan Shepherd had a single and two RBI.
St. Clairsville 11, Union Local 4
AT MEMORIAL PARK, the Red Devils moved to 2-0 as Zac Vicker and Austin Porter teamed on a four-hitter. Vicker picked up the win with seven Ks. Porter fanned three.
Porter led a seven-hit attack with three singles that produced a run. Braylen Blomquist smacked a triple and recorded three runs batted in, while Mason Myers doubled in a pair. Hunter Hoffman had an RBI single.
Shadyside 6, Monroe Central 4
AT WOODSFIELD, the Tigers (3-1) rebounded from Tuesday’s nine-inning loss to Grove City Central Crossing by tallying three runs in the top of the seventh to stun the Seminoles.
Bryce Amos had a single, home run and three RBI to pace the winners. Ryan Florence drove in a run with two singles and Korey Beckett singled twice.
River 4, Bridgeport 0
AT NIEKRO DIAMOND, three River pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout of the host Bulldogs.
Elijah Wayt earned the win, working five strong innings with seven strikeouts. All told, the Pilots pitching fanned 11 Bulldogs.
Peyton Blue led the offensive attack for the Pilots with a double and two RBI, while junior Brody Lollathin had a double and two RBI. Colton Cisar had two singles and a RBI.
TENNIS
Linsly 7, Indian Creek 0
WHEELING — The Cadets had a clean sweep of visiting Indian Creek.
Rachel Ekanem, Ava Bartlett and Olivia Rosenthal all won 8-0 in singles play while Kate Bondarchuk won 8-6.
All three doubles pairings won 8-0. Ekanem paired with Bartlett, Rosenthal with Bondarchuk and Grave Ridenhour combined with Sofia Robertson.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
West Liberty Edged in 14-inning Marathon
WEST LIBERTY — The Slippery Rock softball team outlasted West Liberty, 5-4, Wednesday in a 14-inning marathon that stretched well past the 3-hour mark in non-conference action at the WLU Softball Complex. Darkness halted the second game after five innings of play with the score tied at 4-4.

No. 22 Slippery Rock Sweeps WLU
WEST LIBERTY — The No. 22-ranked Slippery Rock (Pa.) baseball team flexed its nationally-ranked muscles on Wednesday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from West Liberty at a warm but breezy Kovalick Field.
The Rock (13-3) snuffed WLU’s three-game winning streak with an 11-0 win in the opener before shutting out the Hilltoppers (4-19) by a 7-0 tally in the nightcap.
