Patriots Win First Game Of Season Over Morgantown

MORGANTOWN — A five-run second inning allowed Wheeling Park to hold off a late rally and pick up a 9-4 win over Morgantown on the road.

Ryan Yates got the win on the mound, tossing four innings of two-run ball with a couple of strikeouts. He was relieved by Daniel Crumm, who struck out three in three innings.

Catcher Luke Marsh led the way at the dish with four hits, one double, and three RBI. Right fielder Will James drove in a pair of runs on a single and sacrifice fly. Braydon Kupsky knocked four hits with a double and RBI. Crumm and Grants Simons also plated runs.

The Mohigans scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late as the Patriots hung on to win.

SOFTBALL

Oak Glen 15, Linsly 4

WHEELING — The Oak Glen softball team stayed perfect on the season with a 15-4 win on the road at Linsly Friday night.

The game was originally scheduled to take place at Oak Glen, but was moved to Linsly due to the weather and field conditions.

Oak Glen went up 7-0 through four innings, the Cadets clawed back within three with a four-run bottom of the fifth, then the Golden Bears exploded in the sixth to enact the mercy rule, plating the final eight runs.

Four different players doubled for the Bears, while Maddie McKay blasted a homer in addition to getting the win in the circle.

Pitching, she went the first four without allowing a run on just two hits while fanning three.

Olivia Munoz, had a double, two singles and an RBI, Sydney Brown a single and a double, Sarah Brown a single, double and three RBIs, while Emma Renfro and Grace Smith each batted in runs.

McKay was 3 of 4 with three RBIs.

Baeliegh Burwell took the loss for the Cadets.

Alayna Cook led Linsly on offense with a double and two RBI. Grace Landidi stroked a triple and a single while driving in a run. Gia Recrosio drove in a run with a single while Alyssa Tomlinson hit a double.

Weir 7, Morgantown 6

MORGANTOWN — The Weir High softball team made its trip down Interstate 79 a uccessful one Friday, topping Morgantown in dramatic fashion, 7-6, in nine innings.

The win moves the Red Riders to 6-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first four innings, the Riders and Mohigans each played three in the fifth, before Weir took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, then Morgantown forced extras with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

After a scoreless eighth, the Riders drove in three runs in the top of the ninth, then held off another Morgantown rally to earn the win.

Madison Angus went the distance for the win, striking out five and walking one while four of the six runs were earned.

She also plated a run for the Red Riders.

Sophia Aperfine and Malloty Rosnick each had three hits to lead the Weir offense. Aperfine went 3 for 5 with three singles, while Rosnick plated three runs with a triple and two singles.

Rayna Hoover singled twice and drove in a run, while Mea Kauffman also had two hits and Liv Baker an RBI.

The Red Riders are set to play Big Red on Monday.
