Burwell Lifts Linsly Past Bellaire, 11-3
ST. JOE — Be it at the plate or in the circle, Linsly’s Baeliegh Burwell excelled Friday afternoon.
The talented junior scripted a complete-game, 11-strikeout, no-walk pitching effort while also slamming a three-run homer in leading the Lady Cadets to a solid 11-3 win over Bellaire. In addition to her roundtripper, Burwell reached base three times via walks.
The win was the seventh in 12 starts for Linsly. The Cadets visit Beallsville this afternoon.
“Baeliegh had a good day,” Linsly head coach Paul Recrosio said. “She pitched extremely well. The defense was a little shaky behind her at times but a good pitcher makes up for that.
“We left too many runners (12) on base. We must do better in that regard,” he said. “There are some things we still need to tighten up a bit.”
The loss dropped Bellaire, coming off an epic comeback win over St. Clairsville, to 3-7.
The Lady Reds travel to Woodsfield today for a doubleheader against Monroe Central.
“There is not much you can say about this one,” Bellaire head coach Dave Menendez said. “We didn’t play well and they did. Linsly is a good team.
“Their pitcher is a good one. She was in command today,” he added.
“I just told our girls to forget about this one and move on.”
Linsly got on board in the first with a single run, courtesy of two Lady Red errors. The Cadets made it 3-0 in the second inning on a two-run blast over the centerfield fence by sophomore slugger Brooklyn Edge.
Bellaire responded with a run in the home-half of the second. Rylie Porter singled and scored on a Grace Maupin single.
Dana Cook, who had a monster day at the plate for the winners, made it a 4-1 issue with an RBI double in the fourth. She plated Gia Recrosio who opened the inning with a single.
Cook struck again in the fourth. She crushed a two-run triple, making it a 6-1 Linsly advantage.
Bellaire cut the deficit to 6-2 in the fifth via back-to-back doubles off the bats of Sophia Porter and Alexis Morgan.
Linsly broke matters wide open in the sixth inning, erupting for four runs.
Lexie Finley opened with a walk. Cook followed with a single, setting the stage for Burwell’s three-run homer over the centerfield fence. Sophia Monk capped the uprising with an RBI single.
Bellaire tallied its final run in the seventh. Sophia Porter singled and came home on a Taylor Menendez single.
Linsly finished with 10 hits while also taking advantage of 11 walks. Cook led the way with a triple, double and two singles. Seven different Cadets delivered hits.
Majestic Jackson started in the circle for Bellaire. She worked into the sixth, striking out four, walking 10 while yielding six hits.
Maupin finished up. She fanned two and passed one.
The Lady Reds had three performers produce two hits. Sophia Porter and Morgan each had a single and double. Standout junior Lizzie McAninch drilled two singles.
“We are getting better every day. We are a young team but we are making strides,” Recrosio said. “We have played much better as of late. I like to believe we are heading in the right direction.”
