MOUNDSVILLE — The new track and field facilities at Monarch Stadium were finally put to good use Friday as John Marshall hosted eight local schools for the Monarch Relays.

“This is the first large meet at this new facility because the 2020 season got canceled and then last season we had some COVID restrictions,” said JM boys coach Mitchell Burkett. “This was our first real big meet and I thought it went well. It’s nice to see all these OVAC schools come out.”

Linsly took home both team titles as the boys won with a score of 168 over Union Local (129) and JM (91). The Cadet girls won with a score of 125 over John Marshall (118) and Magnolia (108).

The Cadets tallied a number of event wins for both the boys and girls. For the boys, JyLeik Johnson won the 100 meters (11.19), Felix Reitter the 400 meters (53.92), Atley Cowan the 300 hurdles (43.44), Hayden Bozich in shot put (51’11) and George Donovich won the high jump (6’0). The Cadets also had three relay wins with Cowan, Malte Fiel, Stef Landweir and Johnson winning the 4×200 (1:34.82), Riku Vilenius, Micah Kramer, Santiago Graneros and Jon Michael Falbo the 4×400 (3:58.17) and Reitter, Colby Gibbons, Lane Kendzerski and Donovic the 4×110 shuttle hurdles (1:03.26).

For the Linsy girls, Haylen Cook won the 800 meters (2:41.20), Ally Hicks won the 1600 meters (6:00.93) and the 3200 meters (13:11.21) and Kelsey Smith won the shot put (31’7).

Host John Marshall also won several boys and girls events.

For the boys, distance runner MacK Allen won the 3200 meters (10:02.79) by more than two minutes and anchored JM’s distance medley relay team that also took first place (11:50.70). Allen, a senior West Liberty signee, ran the 1600 leg of the relay as Conor Fitzpatrick ran the 1200 leg, Nathaniel Alderman the 400 leg and Owen Anderson-Magers the 800.

“He’s amazing,” Burkett said of Allen. “We were looking to be about in the middle of the pack in the distance medley relay and then he was the anchor running the mile and he just blew everybody out of the water. Then in the 3200, he lapped the entire field. He’s great, West Liberty is going to love him next year.”

Fitzpatrick, a sophomore, also had a strong showing on the night. He won the 800 meters (2:12.41), placed second in the 1600 (5:01.28) and anchored the 4×400 team to a second-place finish.

“Wherever he gets the baton in a relay, I know we’re not out of it,” Burkett said. “The best example is, we were in last place in that 4×400 and once he got the baton he got us into second place. If you gave him a little bit farther, he would have gotten first.”

Ashton Collett won the long jump (20’0.25) for the JM boys.

For the Monarch girls, Camryn Mowder won the 100 hurdles (17.26) and the high jump (5’2) and Madlyn Thomas won the discus (92’7). The relay team of Madelyn Cisar, Jocelyn Cunningham, Brielle Bumgardner and Mowder also won the 4×102.5 shuttle hurdles (1:13.41).

“Overall, I was very pleased with our performance,” Burkett said. “We did well, we exceeded my expectations. Each week I just ask them to get a little bit better than last week.”

The Union Local boys took the silver medal while the Jets girls’ team finished in fourth place.

For the boys, Sawyer Moore won the 200 meters (23.69) and Hayden McCrate won the 110 hurdles (15.64).

Johnny Sabinski dominated the discus field to win with a throw of 149’6. The second-place throw by Linsly’s Turkka Pennanen was just 122’1.5.

Lee Adkins and Cody Street took first and second in the pole vault with jumps of 11’6. The team of Jaksan Price, Eli Davis, Gannon Kerns and Moore also won the 4×100 relay (46.68).

For the UL girls, Josie Goodson won the 400 meters (1:02.61).

The Magnolia Blue Eagles also had a strong team showing with the girls taking the bronze medal and the boys finishing in fourth place.

Jaci Rohde and Jenna Blain cleaned up for the Magnolia girls. Rhode won the 100 meters (13.14), pole vault (8’6) and long jump (15’7.75) while Blain won the 200 meters (27.94), the 300 hurdles (49.96) and anchored the winning 4×100 relay team (54.25). Also on that relay team were Kaylee Cline, Bre Herrick and Sienna McKeever.

For the boys, Landen Davis won the 1600 meters (4:54.95).

Other event winners were Brooke’s 4×200 relay team of Johnna Knorr, Johnna Lahita, Estella Lahita and Melyn Bachinski (1:57.40) and Paden City’s 4×400 relay team of Jocelyn Sawinski, Hallie McDonald, Brandis Dalrymple and Lexi Mathis (4:33.21).

Brooke took fifth place in both the boys and girls team standings and Paden City took sixth in both. Cameron and Beallsville also competed in the meet with Cameron’s girls coming in seventh place.

The Dragons were led by thrower Amber Yoho, who took fourth in the discus (81’7.5) and fifth in the shot put (26’10).
