WHEELING — Wheeling Central freshman Josie Frizzell has been the team’s ace in the hole since the moment she stepped into the circle this season.

She was lights out again on Monday as she fired a complete game to help lift Wheeling Central over visiting Toronto at Ben’s Field at the I-470 Sports Complex.

Frizzell struck out 10 opposing batters, walked three and got out of two jams unscathed late in the game, which included a bases-loaded threat in the fifth inning.

“She’s been doing really well,” Central coach Buck Davidson said. “She is really consistent and for a freshman, she doesn’t get flustered much with runners on the base paths. She was hitting her outside corners a lot (Monday). She is pretty good at hitting spots inside and outside. She is getting a lot more speed off the changeup and fortunately she is only getting better.”

Toronto hitters were also struggling with Frizzell’s high heater.

“We couldn’t lay off the high pitches,” Toronto coach Steve Trifonoff said. “A bunch of her strikeouts came on high fastballs and some we probably shouldn’t be swinging at but that’s how it goes.”

The Maroon Knights’ offense gave Frizzell plenty of run support, as well.

In the bottom of the first, Central (6-1) struck for two as leadoff hitter Jensen Rine walked, Taylor Knollinger reached on an error and Ashlee Baker delivered a two-run double for a 2-0 advantage.

Toronto plated its only run in the second on an error but never crossed the dish again.

Central padded its lead in the bottom of the frame as Rine garnered a RBI single and Frizzell helped her cause with a RBI groundout to create a 4-1 upper hand.

The Maroon Knights softened the cushion to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Ava Hanson smacked a RBI double and Rine tallied a RBI single.

Two Red Knights errors in the fifth gave Central a 7-1 lead and a RBI single by Jocelyn Shaw put the finishing touches on the 8-1 triumph.

Trina Baker doubled in the win and Aspyn Bowman had a pair of hits.

“For a group of young girls, they are awfully patient at the plate,” Davidson said. “(Monday) was the first time we have struck out looking in six games this year. They do a great job. They know what to do and they don’t try to pull an outside pitch. They just hit it to right field. I’m ecstatic.”

Callie Anderson paced the Toronto offense with a double and a single, while Brianna Burruss and Michelle Anderson each tallied two singles and Andrea Reeves doubled.

“We just have to make the plays,” Trifonoff said. “They had some hard-hit balls but we gave them a bunch too. But, that’s what happens when you put the ball in play, you put pressure on the defense. You don’t put pressure on the defense when you strike out 10 times.”
