Holzopfel Leads After 18 Holes at Gannon Invitational

ERIE, Pa. — The Wheeling University Women’s Golf team began their final spring tune-up before the NCAA Atlantic Regional Invitational on Friday at the Gannon Invitational. With 18 holes in the rearview mirror, the reigning Mountain East Conference (MEC) Women’s Golfer of the Week Emily Holzopfel leads the field shooting three over par to finish with a 75.

BASEBALL

Frostburg State 9-12, Wheeling 8-2

WHEELING — Visiting Frostburg State swept the Cardinals at I-470.

The Bobcats scored seven runs in the final two innings to take game one 9-8 and scored multiple runs in four different innings to take game two 13-2.

J.R. Heavilin had two hits, including a double, and two RBI in game one while Garth Charlton hit an RBI double in game two.

West Liberty 0-9

WEST LIBERTY — The Hilltoppers were 1-0 shutout victims in the first game but broke out the heavy artillery to pound out a 9-3 victory over the Battlers in the finale.

Bradley Goodyear and Kanye McGee both went yard for the Hilltoppers in the nightcap victory.

SOFTBALL

W.Va. Wesleyan 7-6, Wheeling 1-3

BUCKHANNON — The Cardinals faced tough pitching throughout the afternoon as they suffered the doubleheader sweep in Buckhannon. They were no-hit in game one, falling 7-1, and fell in game two 6-3.

Brooke Slomkowski led the game two offense going 2-3 with a double and two RBI in the game while Alisa Shelt added a 2-3 effort of her own with a run scored.

Davis & Elkins 8-3, West Liberty 3-7

ELKINS — The Hilltoppers rallied for a 7-3 win in the finale after seeing the host Senators slug their way to an 8-3 nod in the opener.

Paterson led a 10-hit attack at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI. Riley Bennington doubled and drove in a run while Jairika Baylor had a single and two RBIs.

Indian Valley 12, Steubenville 10

STEUBENVILLE — After trailing by eight runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Big Red came a couple inches shy of pulling off a remarkable comeback.

Kye Fleming, Hakim Edwards and Zach Francis all finished with two RBI for Steubenville.

Barnesville 12, Caldwell 0

CALDWELL – The Shamrocks picked up another win as Gavin Carpenter drove in four runs. Kyvan Johnson and Reese Stephen evenly divided four singles, with Johnson driving in two runs and Stephen one.

Shadyside 9, John Marshall 7

GLEN DALE — Shadyside struck eight times in its final two at bats to stun the Monarchs Friday afternoon.

Senior Rhys Francis hit a home run and drove in two runs to fuel the Tiger offense. Senior catcher Ryan Florence added two singles and a rbi, while Bryce Amos had two singles and two rbi. Alex Baker singled home two runs.

Tyler Stottlemyer earned the pitching win in relief.

Brennan Sobutka had a double and four RBI for the Monarchs.

Edison 5, Bellaire 3

RICHMOND – Bellaire out-hit the Wildcats, but came up a couple of runs short Friday evening.

Chance Maffe had three singles and a RBI for the Big Reds, while Caden Banal had a RBI single. Jakob Dowling drove in a run.

Cambridge 7, St. Clairsville 2

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Red Devils dropped to 4-4 on the season after falling to the Bobcats for the second time in as many days.

St. Clairsville was led by Austin Porter who hit a solo home run. Joey Balgo had two singles and a double, while Zac Vickers singled home a run.

Brooke 17, Union Local 3

WELLSBURG – For the second time in as many days, the Bruins have taken down a Belmont squad.

Logan Hess singled twice and drove in a run for UL. Josh Neidert doubled.

Union Local 12-18

East Liverpool 2-2

MORRISTOWN – Union Local was hitting on all cylinders Good Friday with a softball doubleheader sweep of visiting East Liverpool.

The Jets (6-3) needed just five innings in each game as the OHSAA mercy rule kicked in.

Keira Gregor had a big part in the two victories as she was the winner in the circle. The senior fanned five in the opener and a pair in the nightcap without a walk in either contest. At the plate, she cranked out a single, double and home run that produced two runs in the first game. She added a pair of one-base raps and a double in game two.

Hannah Merritt singled twice, collected two doubles and plated three runs, while Haleigh Romshak had a two-run homer in the first game and a two-run single in the second. Lauren Miller added a single, two doubles and an RBI. Torre Kildow drove in two runs with a single and double.

Harrison Central 4, Buckeye Local 3

CADIZ – The Huskies scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead over the visiting Panthers (1-5), but the Connorville-based crew scored three of their own in the seventh after being held scoreless for the first six innings.

Winning pitcher Tristen Kovarik singled in two runs while Rylee Smith produced a run. She also fanned six from inside the circle while issuing one walk and allowing seven hits. She recorded six Ks.

Shadyside 6, Frontier 3

BEAVERTON – The Lady Tigers picked up their second straight victory by fending off the Cougars.

Junior Gentry Brown provided a bulk of the offense with two home runs, a double and five total RBI. Mary Smith connected for a solo home run. Rylie Fulton had two singles.

Ariana Saxton picked up the win in the circle with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
