Holzopfel Shines for Wheeling

White Sulfer — Throughout the spring season, the Wheeling University Women’s Golf team has been looking for consistency in their scores. On day one of the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, they seemed to hit their stride sitting in third with a total team score of 328. Three of Wheeling’s five golfers shot under an 85 on the day as they put themselves just eight strokes off of the tournament leader, the University of Lynchburg.

Leading the way after day one is junior Emily Holzopfel, who shot a 75 through the course’s first 18 holes. After posting her highest scores of the spring so far in the most recent outing in Columbus, Ohio Holzopfel came back strong and was under the 80 stroke mark once again. She started the day off strong right from the get-go, shooting a birdie on hole one to get her at one under par. Aside from a double bogey on hole four, Holzopfel was consistent throughout the front nine, hitting par on seven of the final eight holes, and finished at +1 after nine holes. On the back nine, Holzopfel began with two pars and added a pair of bridies on holes 13 and 18. She finished at +3 overall for the tournament, posting a 75 through 18 holes.

SOFTBALL

West Lib Falls to Glenville State

WEST LIBERTY — The West Liberty University softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Glenville State Monday afternoon in the first game of a scheduled Mountain East Conference doubleheader at a rain-swept WLU Softball Complex.

The second game of the twinbill was halted by a heavy downpour shortly after getting under way.

The game was canceled after a lengthy rain delay and will be rescheduled at a later date.

In the opener, a pair of Hilltopper errors in the top of the fourth gave the visitors a pair of unearned runs and that proved to be the only scoring of the game for either team.

Pioneer flamethrower Holly Brehm fired a five-hit shutout, striking out 11 West Liberty batters while giving up only one walk. Grace Swigart had two of the Hilltoppers’ five singles in a losing cause.

Starting at $2.99/week.
