Martins Ferry Softball Locks Up Top Seed

WOODSFIELD — Martins Ferry swept a doubleheader from Monroe Central to lock up the top seed in the OVAC Class 3A tournament this week. The Purple Riders won 10-3 in 9 innings and then needed only five innings to win 12-1.

The Purple Riders needed nine innings before exploding for a seven spot to blow the game open.

Senior Maria Clark was impressive in the circle. She logged all nine innings, striking out 15 and walking just two. She also had a double, single and two RBI.

Taylor Bell had a huge day at the plate. She had three doubles and two RBI, while Ella McFarland and Nevaeh Hall each had two hits and a RBI. Hunter Pollock had three singles and a RBI. Trista Morris had two singles for the Seminoles.

In the second game, it was all Riders. McFarland was impressive in the circle with four strikeouts and nary a walk.

Bell had a home run, single and six RBI. Clark had two singles and a like number of RBI. Danielle Lude had a double, two singles and two RBI.

Monroe Central’s Makenna Matz hit a solo home run.

Wheeling Central 10-9, Paden City 2-4

WHEELING — The Maroon Knights’ offense fired on all cylinders, scoring 19 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Paden City. Central won game one 10-2 and the nightcap by a score of 9-4.

Jensen Rine collected four total hits to lead the offense, knocking three singles and a double. Brooke Reynolds struckout nine batters in the circle in game one and also hit a single and a double. Jocelyn Shaw hit a home run in game one.

Taylor Knollinger, Ashlee Baker and Josie Frizzell all hit doubles for Central as game two went the whole seven innings. Shayna Beegle started the game and struck out three and Frizzell came on in the fourth and punched out six.

Haiston Fox and Carlee Sweeney both hit a pair of singles for the Wildcats while Destiny Rone and McKenzie Thomas both hit a double in game two.

Brooke 8, Linsly 7

WELLSBURG — Landry Bone hit a grand slam and the Brooke Bruins defeated Linsly 8-7 at home.

Gia Recrosio, Haley Heitz, Gace Landini and Lexi Finley all hit a double for the visitors but it was not enough.

Emily Knorr, Kam Eckels, Lex Foresha and Em McKinney all added RBIs for the Bruins.

Shenandoah 5-2, Shadyside 4-3

SHADYSIDE — The Tigers and Zeps split a pair Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Charli Wickham had eight strikeouts and nary a walk to earn the win for the Zeps. Talented sophomore Mya Leach had a home run, double and single, while driving in three runs.

Shadyside was led by Bella Honeywell, who had a double, home run and three RBI. Mary Smith also had a double.

In the nightcap, the Tigers received strong pitching from Arianna Saxton, who fanned 10 and didn’t issue a walk.

Honeywell had a double, while Rylie Fulton singled home a run. Mady Violet and Macy Hendershot each had a RBI.

Buckeye Local 5, Shadyside 3

CONNORVILLE — The Panthers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to earn the win over the Tigers, who played a tripleheader on Saturday.

Buckeye Local was led by Rylie White, who had a triple, single and three RBI. Isabella Hepburn had a single and two RBI, while Alli Trekal doubled. Samantha Ankrom picked up the win in the circle with two strikeouts.

The Tigers received a double, two singles and an RBI from Rylie Fulton. Bella Honeywell and Maci Hendershot each had three singles. Macy Hendershot had a single and RBI.

Beallsville 13-5, Bridgeport 4-1

BRIDGEPORT — The invading Blue Devils wrapped up a spot in the OVAC Class 1A Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs.

Beallsville received brilliant pitching from Kaylee Hagan, who struck out six and walked one. She also had a double, single and two RBI.

The Blue Devils offense also received two doubles, a single and three RBI from Jaycee Wells. Kinley Hughes had two triples, a single and three RBI.

Bridgeport received a single and two RBI from Nevaeh Fine.

In the second game, the Blue Devils gave the ball to Hughes, who struck out seven and walked two. She also had a double, single and two RBI. Sydnee Otto had a single and drove in two.

Hailee Aubrey had a trio of singles for the Bulldogs.

Bellaire 17-4, St. Clairsville 6-10

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils presented first-year head coach Rick Magruder with his first win as skipper Saturday, but they fell to the Big Reds in the opening game of the twinbill.

In the opener, the Big Reds received multiple RBI from three players. Majestique Jackson had two singles and three RBI, while Lizzie McAninch and Taylor Menendez each had two RBI. Alli Ault had a double, single and a RBI. Rylie Porter, who picked up the win in the circle, had two singles.

The Red Devils received a double from junior Abby Salisbury. Hannah Thoburn had a double, single and three RBI. Emily Dubinski produced a single and two RBI.

In the second game, The Red Devils received solid pitching from Lainey Benedict, who struck out four in the complete-game effort. At the plate, Dubinski had a single and three RBI.

Thoburn had two doubles, a single and three RBI. Rachel Finnical had a double, single and RBI. Jennan Wodarczyk had a single and two RBI and Miranda Carman singled in a run.

BASEBALL

Bellaire 13, Steubenville Catholic 2

NEFFS – The Big Reds scored early and often en route to a mercy-rule victory against the Crusaders on Saturday.

Luke Heatherington earned the mound win with three strikeouts and a walk in an efficient 56-pitch effort. He had two singles and two RBI at the plate.

Chance Maffe had two singles and four RBI, while Joey Lewis had a double and RBI. Landen Preston had a single, double and drove in a run. Kaden Banal and Jakob Dowling each had two hits. Brayden Roth singled in a run.

LACROSSE

George Washington 9, Wheeling Central 7

CHARLESTON — Wheeling Central came up two goals short on the road at George Washington Saturday. Braxton Anderson scored three goals for the Maroon Knights followed by two for John Emmerth and one each for Ethan Taylor and Matthew Maroney. Andrew Johnson and Luca Ferrera each had an assist. Deante Suggs made 14 saves in goal.
