St. C. Sweeps Buckeye 8

ROGERS – St. Clairsville used its overall depth and strength in the distance events as well as the field to sweep the Buckeye 8 Track and Field championships held at chilly Beaver Local Tuesday evening.

The Red Devils boys finished with 129 points, which was 14 more than the runner-up Beavers. The title is St. Clairsville’s 10th overall in boys track.

The St. C. girls, meanwhile, accumulated 119.5 points, which was 15.5 ahead of Beaver.

BOYS

St. Clairsville was fueled to the title by five victories.

Senior Nate Thornburg won the 800 in 2:08.77 and sophomore Ben Shields was the 1600 champion in 5:01.82.

The Devils also claimed the 4×4 with a team of Rece Spomer, Nate Thornburg, Gannon Kazmirski and Nathaniel Ellison posting a 3:45.33.

The 4×8 team of Thornburg, Shields, Jack Gasber and Kazmirski got the winning started for the Red Devils with a time of 8:51.98.

In the field, Karl Kain won the pole vault with a jump of 11-6.

Union Local, which was the defending champion, finished fourth in the meet.

Sophomore strong man Johnny Sabinski won the shot put with a toss of 48-10 ¾.

Bellaire, which finished fifth in the team standings, received a pair of victories. Senior Colt Sechrest won the discus with a mark of 165-5.

Junior Stefan Palneicek won the 3200 meter run in 11:22.23.

GIRLS

St. Clairsville won the title and only won two of the 17 contested events.

Senior All-Ohioan Emily Thompson won the pole vault with an 8-6 clearance and the Devils’ 4×1 team of Thompson, Maddie Stock, Laili Dombrowski and Emma Henry turned in a 54.78 to win the lap relay.

Union Local finished fifth and received a double sprint win from senior Jaci Reynolds. She won the 100 (13.31) and the 200 (27.47), while junior Josie Goodson claimed the 400 in 1:05.89.

Bellaire had a pair of winners in the meet.

Junior Bethany McElfresh won the 3200 in 13:38.26, while senior Katelyn Hart won the discus with a mark of 81-8.

Harrison Central’s Carys Haney won the shot put with a mark of 32-7 ¾.

Martins Ferry’s lone victory came in the 4×8 when the team of Megan Buska, Madeline Clark, Madison Oberle and Karis Oliver posted an 11:45.16 for the win.

Indian Creek junior Madison Conrad was a double winner. She captured the 800 and 1600 meter runs in 2:41.92 and 6:03.34.

COLLEGE TENNIS

West Liberty Knocks Off

Regionally-Ranked WVSU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women’s tennis team pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory against West Virginia State on Tuesday in a late-season battle of regionally-ranked Mountain East Conference rivals at the Fox Tennis Center on the campus of Marshall University.

Ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll, Coach Heather Gallagher’s Hilltoppers (11-4, 5-0) came up big in singles play on Tuesday to hand the No. 3-ranked Yellowjackets (11-5, 5-1) their first MEC loss of the season.

West Liberty got off to a good start by claiming the doubles point. Bouncing back from a 6-1 loss at No. 3 doubles, WLU’s No. 2 pairing of Evelina Martirosyan and Gemma Cliffe breezed to a 6-3 win and the No. 1 duo of Emma Arnal and Daria Shchoma prevailed, 7-5, to send the Hilltoppers into singles play with a 1-0 lead.

Arnal kept WLU’s hopes alive with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles and the remaining two matches went to third-set tiebreakers with the Hilltoppers coming out on top each time.

Martirosyan rebounded from a lopsided 6-1 loss in the first set of her No. 2 singles match to post a 6-4 win in the second set.

Shchoma also had to come from behind for her crucial win at No. 6 singles.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Williamsburg Academy 5

Tyler Consolidated 4

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Tyler Consolidated went to Myrtle Beach and fell by one to defending small school South Carolina state champion Williamsburg Academy in the Mingo Bay Classic Pool Play opener.

Ty Walton struck out eight in five frames for the Silver Knights.

Zade Billings doubled and drove in two runs, while Jayden Helmick tallied a hit and two RBI for Tyler.
