Madonna Powers Past Magnolia in Playoff Action

WEIRTON — Matt Amaismeier singled, doubled and drove in a run as Madonna downed Magnolia on Monday in the Class A Section One opener.

The Blue Dons will take on Wheeling Central tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.

Dom Maple sparked the Dons with two hits and a RBI, while Luke Amaismeier garnered a hit and two RBI in the win.

Sean Gilmore struck out eight with no walks to secure the victory on the mound.

Paden City 5, Hundred 1

PADEN CITY — Will McGinnis struck out 14 on the mound, while hitting a single, a double and driving in two runs to lead Paden City past Hundred in postseason action.

Kayden Myers and Liam Clements each singled and had a RBI.

Christian Fluharty struck out 17 for the Hornets.

Class AA, Section One

Weir 9, Oak Glen 4

NEW MANCHESTER — Weir held off Oak Glen in sectional baseball action.

Anthony Cross got the win on the mound tossing the first 4 1/3 innings, and G. Cross hit a key two-run double after the Golden Bears had started to mount a comeback.

Shadyside 12, Union Local 6

SHADYSIDE — Rhys Francis struck out 10 as Shadyside defeated Union Local.

Alex Baker, Korey Beckett and Mason Vannest each turned in two hits and two RBI for the Tigers.

Dalton Hess rapped an RBI single while Jake Toohey brought home two more teammates on a triple.

Class AAA, Section One

Morgantown 12, Wheeling Park 11

MORGANTOWN — Wheeling Park trailed by seven after two innings but rallied to pull even before Morgantown secured a walk-off win in the seventh inning to eliminate the Patriots.

Morgantown will play John Marshall tonight.

Katelyn Kozlowski paced Park with two hits and four RBI, while Mary Derrow garnered two hits and two RBI and Shelby Crow added two hits and one RBI.

Oak Glen 6, Weir 3

NEW MANCHESTER — With her team trailing by a run and two out in the bottom of the fifth, Kenna Calahan blasted a three-run homer to give Oak Glen its first lead, which it would not surrender in beating Weir.

Class A, Section One

WHEELING — Josie Frizzell fanned 13 with no walks as she pitched Wheeling Central to a shutout victory over Magnolia.

Ashlee Baker ripped two singles and a double for the victorious Knights, while Jocelyn Shaw and Taylor Knollinger each collected two hits.

WLU Earns Tourney Win

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men’s tennis team rolled to a 4-2 victory against Mercyhurst here Monday in an NCAA Division II Atlantic Region One Tournament semifinal at the Schoenbaum Park Courts.

Coach Ron Hulewicz’s Hilltoppers will be back on the Schoenbaum Park Courts Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. to take on top-seeded and No. 19-ranked Charleston for the regional title and a berth in the NCAA Division II Nationals later this month.

West Liberty took control of the match from the start, claiming the doubles point in less than 45 minutes. Isfan Makhmudov and Daisuke Aota teamed up for a convincing 6-2 win against the Lakers’ Ben Davis and Noha De Sousa at No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 doubles tandem followed suit with a 6-3 nod over MU’s Hristo Plasheski and Morris Haab.

The Hilltoppers kept right on rolling as singles play got under way. Moritz Erpel blitzed Mercyhurst’s David Akinpetide, 6-1 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Anton Schulz made short work of Milan Jankovic, 6-3 6-2, in the No. 2 singles slot for a 3-0 WLU advantage.
