Oak Glen 1 Win Away From State Tournament

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The Oak Glen softball team is on a mission this season and the Golden Bears are one game away from returning to the Class AA state tournament after a 6-4 win over Keyser on Tuesday in the first game of a best-of-three Region 1 championship series.

Oak Glen improves to 25-2 and will head to Keyser today for the second game of the series. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Keyser fell to 30-4 and was riding an eight-game winning streak.

Oak Glen has won nine straight.

The Golden Tornado team was plagued by four errors caused by aggressive Oak Glen base running

Oak Glen’s Sydney Brown opened the Golden Bear scoring by coming home on an error by the Keyser catcher. Kenna Calahan scored shortly thereafter on a wild pitch.

Lizzie Kell later reached on an error by the pitcher which allowed Maddie McKay and Olivia Munoz to score to make it 4-0.

Keyser settled down a bit after that until Oak Glen extended the lead in the fourth. Makayla Zoeller’s bunt with one out allowed Munoz to score to make it 5-0 and Lizzie Kell later scored with two outs on an RBI single by Calahan to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Golden Tornado showed some strength at the plate in the later innings with Alexa Shoemaker and MaKayla Gillaspie hitting solo home runs off McKay.

Morgan Pratt also had an RBI double in the seventh.

McKay, a Toledo University recruit, was solid with 15 strikeouts on 107 pitches.

Munoz managed two hits including a double for the Golden Bears.

Oak Glen and Keyser went to three games in last season’s Region 1 championship series with the Golden Tornado taking the first game and Oak Glen winning the last two. Two of those games were decided by one run.

Oak Glen was one-game away from winning the state title last year before Herbert Hoover won the final two games to block the Bears from the state title.

Starting at $2.99/week.
