Thompson’s Record Highlights Day 1 of OVAC Qualifiers

St. Clairsville senior Emily Thompson sets a new OVAC Class 4A pole vault record, clearing a height of 11-6 Monday.
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Emily Thompson’s 11-foot-6-inch pole-vault set a new OVAC Class 4A record, highlighting the first day of OVAC track and field qualifying meets.
Monday was the qualifying meet for Class 4A and 5A teams while classes 1A-3A will compete in their own qualifying meet throughout the day today.
Competing on her home field at Red Devil Stadium, Thompson, a St. Clairsville senior, won the event by more than three feet and secured herself a spot in Saturday’s OVAC Cal Griffin Track Championship.
Thompson also secured a spot in the 100 hurdles, winning the event with a time of 16.70. The Red Devils had another dual-winner with sophomore Emma Henry claiming individual event wins in the 100-meter (12.80) and 200 (26.82).
No 4A girls squad collected more event wins than the Red Devils on Monday. St. Clairsville topped the results in seven events, led by Thompson and Henry.
St. C. also claimed the top spots in the 4×100 shuttle hurdles (1:11.72), 4×100 relay (52.17) and Luci Banks won the 3200 in 14:27.64. The shuttle team included Sydney Miller, Delaney Florence, Alivia DaRe and Thompson. The relay team had Madie Stock, Laili Dombroski, Thompson and Henry.
Second among girls teams in Class 4A was Oak Glen with five event wins.
Individually, Kensington McConnachie won the long jump (16-10 1/4), Kami Ward won the 400 meter (60.26) and Sophia Arner took the 1600 with a time of 5:37.58.
The Golden Bears also had teams win the 4×800 relay (11:10.43) and the 4×400 relay (4:27.12). The 4×800 team was made up of Ava Ross, Carson Barr, Hannah Kliner and Arner. The 4×400 team included Phoebe Molish, Tasha Ward, Gracie Wright and Ward.
Weir’s Kendall Brobish won the shot put (33-4) and Naomi Young won the 800 (2:31.38).
Rachel Nesbitt of Edison won the discus with a throw of 105-11.
Class 5A
The girls’ Class 5A competition was close, with Morgantown’s seven event wins just edging out Steubenville’s six.
The Big Red boasted individual winners Amya Livingston in the shot put (43-3 1/2), Isabella Yetts in the 400 (60.95), Sabrina Jones in the 100 (12.42), long jump (17-10 1/2) and 200 (25.84).
Steubenville also won the 4×200 relay with Mya Stackhouse, Madalyn Criss, Yetts and Jones in 1:45.13.
Wheeling Park won four events with Adrianna Fazzini in the discus (113-3), Sophie Abraham in the 100 hurdles (16.37) and Lily Hanna in the 300 hurdles (48.02). The team of Abraham, Hanna, Caroline L’Ecuyer and Savannah Turner Davis won the 4×100 shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:10.72.
Boys
Class 4A
The boys’ class 4A was another tightly-contested division, with Union Local and Cambridge each winning five events and St. Clairsville taking four.
The Jets swept the throwing events with Johnny Sabinski winning the shot put (50-3 1/2) and discus (143-6). They also swept the hurdle events with Hayden McCrate winning the 110 (15.88) and 300 (44.03) individual hurdles and the team of DJ Butts, Carter Blake, Dylan Moore and McCrate winning the 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.75).
For St. Clairsville, Karl Kain won the pole vault (13-6) and Gannon Kazmirski won the 800 (2:05.20). Ben Shields, Jack Gasber, Nate Thornburg and Kazmirski won the 4×800 relay (8:28.10) and Rece Spomer replaced Shields on the winning 4×400 team (3:34.44).
Oak Glen won several long-distance events with Konnor Allison winning the 1600 (4:28.28), Nick Gallow winning the 3200 (10:08.06) and Matthew Greenlief winning the 400 (52.45).
Weir’s Jayson Nosko won the high jump (6-2).
Class 5A
Steubenville led Class 5A boys with seven top-qualifiers, followed by Morgantown’s six.
Big Red won the 110 hurdles (Savior Faulks, 15.94), 400 (Inky Jones, 49.77), shot put (Bryce Huff, 44-6 1/2), 300 hurdles (Micah Mitchell, 39.82) and 200 (Jones, 22.51).
Steubenville also won the 4×200 relay (Faulks, Jalen Minniefield, Mitchell and Jones, 1:30.94) and 4×400 relay (Faulks, Josh Schoonover, Mitchell and Jones , 3:29.40).
