SOFTBALL

Toronto 5, Monroe Central 4

TORONTO — The Red Knights big hitters felt like they let an opportunity get away early in Tuesday’s Division IV East District sectional semifinal against Monroe Central. They made up for it later.

After watching three-run lead evaporate in the top of the sixth and seventh innings and the game appearing like it may head to extra innings with two out in the bottom of the seventh, Michelle Anderson ripped a two-out RBI double to the fence in center for the walk-off victory, advancing the Red Knights to the sectional final.

Weir 8, Fairmont Senior 0

WEIRTON – Madison Angus doubled down the right-field line, and Rayna Hoover followed with a blast over the fence in left to give the Red Riders a two-run lead against the Polar Bears.

Hoover’s home run provided the spark Weir – the No. 2 seed – needed as it went on to score six more runs in the fifth to defeat No. 3 seed Fairmont Senior, via mercy rule in a West Virginia Class AA Region 1 Section 1 elimination game Tuesday evening at home.
