SHADYSIDE — Shadyside senior pitcher Bryce Amos didn’t allow a hit in his last three starts of the season.

That’s right — three consecutive no-hitters!

Well, word has gotten out about the young ace as he was offered a spot on the West Virginia University baseball team and he jumped at the opportunity as he committed to be a Mountaineer last week.

“I always wanted to play Division I ball,” Amos said. “That’s been a goal of mine for a long time. Now, to be able to do it this close to home — I couldn’t ask for more. I’m excited that I’ll get the opportunity to keep playing baseball. There is no better situation.”

Amos was committed to Tulane for the last two seasons but a coaching change caused Amos to go looking for his future home once again.

“I was committed to Tulane for two years but their head coach was let go,” Amos said. “So I started looking for other places to play and WVU called me and (assistant) coach (Steve) Sabins offered me a spot. I couldn’t be more grateful to play at a great program.”

Ending his season with three straight no-hitters was no accident. After Amos tossed his first two no-hit gems, he took the mound his next time out expecting to do the unthinkable.

“Every time I went out there I wanted to throw a no-hitter,” Amos said. “I knew I had one going in all three games but that kept me on my toes and gave me a goal. I just went out and executed.”

As the season progressed, Amos also realized that not only was he firing a solid fastball, but his slider was blossoming into one of his most reliable pitches and he used it to his advantage.

“My velocity was good with my fastball but at the end of the high school season, it was my slider that was really working well,” Amos said. “I was able to throw it during any count and any situation. I just felt good throwing it for a strike. I remember one count where I was down 3-0 and I threw three straight sliders to get a strikeout. That’s when I knew I could throw the pitch.”

While the country roads are taking him to a new home in Morgantown, Amos will always be grateful for the support he received from the community in Shadyside.

“The support from everybody in Shadyside is amazing,” Amos said. “It’s such a close town and everybody knows everybody. Everybody is at every game and the fans are the best.”

Although the no-hitters were impressive, it was the time spent with his teammates and love of his family that Amos will remember the most.

“My family and my teammates,” Amos said regarding his biggest supporters. “My high school teammates are my best friends and they have been for a long time. Everybody on that team contributed a lot to our success.”
