Ohio Backs Fit Coach McKenzie’s System Well
When building the rosters for the 75th annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game, it would be easy to just load up on the players who earned the most accolades.
Beaver Local’s Mike McKenzie, who will guide the Ohio squad in the July 23 game at Wheeling Island Stadium, had a perfect storm when he and his coaching staff began selecting their roster. Those players with the most accolades actually fit quite well into the system the Beavers’ brass plans to employ.
McKenzie has announced the quarterbacks will be Monroe Central’s Malachi Rose-Burton and St. Clairsville’s Drew Sefsick, while Shadyside’s Wyatt Reiman and St. Clairsville’s Jacob Jordan will get the bulk of the carries at running back.
“The quarterbacks fit well into our system because both have the ability to throw and run,” McKenzie said. “The running backs both provide a little pop and have home-run ability. We really think we can do multiple things with those guys and make it tough on West Virginia.”
Here’s a capsule look at the players:
JACOB JORDAN, St. Clairsville — This former Red Devil put forth a season — and career– to remember for Coach Brett McLean’s Red Devils.
Jordan rushed for an impressive 1,701 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior. He caught two touchdowns as well. All told, he caught eight passes for 135 yards.
The 5-6, 177 pounder earned All-Eastern District, All-Buckeye 8 and was an All-OVAC Academic selection as well as a four-year letterman.
Jacob, who plans to attend Stark State College, is the son of Allison and Anthony Jordan.
WYATT REIMAN, Shadyside — This former Tiger capped a brilliant prep career with a senior season to remember for Coach Mark Holenka’s team.
The 6-1, 175 pounder was named First Team All-Ohio in Division VII for the third straight season and rushed for 4,386 yards and 72 touchdowns during his career. He caught 67 passes for 1,239 yards and 12 more touchdowns. All told, he found the end zone 87 times for touchdowns and scored a whopping 564 points in his career.
He was named the Division VII Eastern District Player of the Year in both 2020 and 2021. He was a multiple-time First Team All-OVAC selection and won the WTOV-9 Big 22 Player of the Year award.
Reiman was also a two-time state track qualifier.
Wyatt, who is undecided about his future plans, is the son of Matt and Melanie Reiman.
MALACHI ROSE-BURTON, Monroe Central — It would not be an exaggeration to say this former Seminoles’ standout did everything except sell tickets as he shined in multiple capacities for Coach Josh Ischy’s team.
The 6-0, 175 pounder accounted for 82% of his team’s offense with an incredible 3,446 yards of total offense. He completed 92 of 185 passes for 1,297 yards and 18 touchdowns. He rushed 144 times for 1,471 yards and 21 touchdowns. All told, he played a role in 236 of the Seminoles’ 293 total points.
Rose-Burton was named First Team All-Ohio in Division VII as well as the Eastern District’s Co Player of the Year. He was named to the First Team All-OVAC.
A standout in basketball, Rose-Burton averaged almost 14 points a game and played in the OVAC All-Star Game.
Malachi, who is the son of Faythe Friday and Courtney Burton, plans to attend Franciscan University to play basketball.
DREW SEFSICK, St. Clairsville — This senior certainly made the most of his one season as the starting quarterback for Coach Brett McLean’s Devils.
The 5-11, 190 pounder completed 95 of 145 passesfor 1,868 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed for 641 yards and 8 touchdowns. His senior season, however, was cut short when he sustained a knee injury in the playoffs.
Regardless of the injury, Sefsick was named All-Ohio for the third consecutive season. He was an All-Ohioan as a punter in both 2019 and 2020. He was named All-OVAC, All-Buckeye 8 and All-Eastern District First Team.
Along with football, Sefsick was a multi-year standout on both the basketball and baseball teams at St. C.
Drew, who plans to attend Wheeling University to play baseball, is the son of Doug and Robin Sefsick.
