GLEN DALE — The baseball field at John Marshall may need to be re-done following the beating Wellsburg Post 34 and Moundsville Post 3 gave it during their game Monday evening.

In the seven-inning affair, which Wellsburg won 10-6, the teams combined to put 63 balls in play. Those 63 balls resulted in 26 hits, all singles, and 11 total errors. There were only four strikeouts and just one walk throughout the entire contest.

“They hit those high chops and we just didn’t get a break,” Moundsville manager Tim Koontz said. “Too many mistakes, too many bad breaks.”

Just like when these two played at Brooke High School last week, Moundsville got on top early just for Wellsburg to come back and win.

Post 3 scored in each of the first three innings and led 4-1 heading into the top of the fourth. In that fourth inning, starting pitcher Luke Crammer allowed Raymond DeFranco to score, but still had a 4-2 lead as he walked back to his dugout following a groundout to third base.

The entire Post 3 team had made it into their dugout area and most of Post 34’s players were heading to their defensive positions when the umpires correctly informed everyone that there were still only two outs in the frame.

Moundsville wishes that had been the end of the inning, however, as Wellsburg’s Zach Omery hit a two-out, two-run chopper back up the middle to score Hunter Mozingo and Ian Robinson and tie the game at 4-4.

Post 34 skipper Micah Knisely thought Post 3’s players were a little off after the mix-up with the number of outs and his team was able to take advantage of it.

“I think that took a lot out of their mental confidence, coming off (the field) and then going back onto the field to play again,” Knisely said. “You can tell they’re a young team and they made some mistakes and you’ve got to capitalize on them.”

Wellsburg scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take their first lead of the game.

“We just kept fighting,” Knisely said. “We got down early, chipped away to tie it up then we took the lead and kept it. That’s baseball, you’ve just got to keep playing.”

Omery and Austin Robinson had run-scoring hits while two other runs scored on passed balls.

Chad Frazier hit a two-run single for Post 3 in the bottom of the sixth, but Wellsburg held on to secure the come-from-behind win.

Post 34 struggled in the field early on, whether it be throwing errors, mental mistakes or misplays, but Knisely said he was proud they were able to overcome that.

“That was our biggest problem the last three games,” he said. “We try to limit them the best we can. The good teams will overcome those, the ones that don’t, don’t win.

Tyler Stauffer, Will McGinnus, Cole Sutphin and Nate Smith all had multi-hit games for the hosts. McGinnus and Carson Gorby each drove in a run while Frazier had two RBI.

Andrew Coursin pitched four strong innings in relief for Post 34, earning the win while allowing two runs on five hits. Omery finished with two singles and three RBI. Lester Gajtka and Austin Robinson each drove in a run. DeFranco tallied three hits and Coursin had two.

Post 34 will stay in the area throughout the week, playing the Wheeling Wildthings at Wheeling Park on Wednesday and Wheeling Post 1 at I-470 on Thursday.

Post 3 will play at Follansbee Post 45 later today.

Starting at $2.99/week.
