Cambridge Shuts Out IC

WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek football team could not finish against Cambridge.

The Redskins had four chances in scoring position against the Bobcats, however, the visitors beared down and kept the hosts off the scoreboard.

On the other side, the boys from Guernsey County made the most of their opportunities as quarterback Caden Moore threw four touchdowns leading Cambridge to a 28-0 in the season opener Friday night at Kettlewell Stadium.

“Probably the biggest thing was our inconsistency to finish and giving up big plays,” Indian Creek (0-1) head coach Andrew Connor, who is in his 20th season, said. “Those were the two biggest things. Defensively, we gave up big plays, and offensively we were not able to finsh off drives.”

The victors scored a touchdown in all four quarters.

“To get a shutout on the road is amazing,” Cambridge (1-0) head coach Ray Leek said. “Our guys flew to the ball. They played with effort and energy. We have some things we need to clean up on both sides of the ball.”

Moore threw for 242 yards while also adding 34 yards on the ground. Moore threw each touchdown pass to a different receiver.

The Redskins gained 197 yards on the ground and 61 through the air, but Indian Creek was unable to put points on the scoreboard when it had the chance. The Redskins turned the ball over on downs once, the half ended on an incomplete pass and the home team turned it over twice — once on an interception and once on a fumble.

Cambridge opened the scoring when Moore hooked up with Davion Bahr for a 35-yard touchdown, and the extra point gave the Bobcats a 7-0 with 1:13 left to play in the first quarter.

In the second stanza, Moore threw a 4-yard score to Beau Stottsberry, and the conversion kick increased the Bobcats advantage to 14-0 with 6:15 remaining in the first half.

Moore’s third touchdown pass of the night came less than four minutes into the third quarter when he threw a 49-yarder to Xander Caldwell. The extra point made the score 21-0 with 9:44 left in the quarter.

The Bobcats capped the scoring when Devin Ogle hauled in a 9-yard score in the fourth. The PAT made the score 28-0 with 7:35 remaining in the game.

“I have to do a better job of having our kids prepared,” Connor said. “I have to a better job of getting us ready next week.”

Zion McGee was one of the bright spots for Indian Creek as the running back ran the ball for 120 yards. McGee also hauled in a 21-yard reception.

The Redskins also got a solid contribution on the ground from Cameron McAfee, who finished with 55 yards.

“I thought our kids played hard,” Connor said. “I think the work for us is finish. We were just inconsistent. That was the biggest thing. Our Achilles’ heel tonight was we were able to move the ball, but we were unable to finish.”

The Redskins played two quarterbacks, and they combined to throw for 61 yards and an interception. The interception was a backbreaker as it came just inside the Bobcats’ one.

“That was huge for us,” Leek said. “We got the momentum with that pick.”

Both teams are scheduled to play Friday night at home in Week 2.

Indian Creek is slated to play East Liverpool, while Cambridge is set to play host to Coshocton.

Starting at $2.99/week.
