Martins Ferry Will Honor 2001-02 Girls’ Basketball Squad as ‘Team of Distinction’

The Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has selected another deserving team from the past as a “Team of Distinction” to be honored this year. The “Teams of Distinction” category was established to bring to light Purple Rider teams who may not have been state champions like the three teams inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015 (1930 baseball; 1941 basketball; 1941 football) but they set standards in their sport by reaching the regional finals and/or state level, and others deemed to have gone “above and beyond” in some manner.

The only team selected this year is the 2001-02 girls’ basketball team.

That team will be recognized at the home varsity football game on Friday, Sept. 2 against Union Local. A photo of the team will join those previously selected on the wall inside the MFHS cafeteria.

The committee asks that anyone on these teams (or if you know someone), please forward this information to them. Members of the teams who plan to attend should email Joe Mamone (joe.mamone@omeresa.net).

Here’s a look at the accomplishments of the 2001-2002 Lady Riders’ basketball team:

The squad — coached by Kim Appolloni — featured a combination of five seniors and several talented underclassmen. The Lady Riders finished with a sparkling 22-3 record, the best in school history for the girls’ program.

Ferry captured the OVAC Class 3A crown and then turned in a strong postseasons, winningthe OHSAA Division III Sectional by defeating Barnesville (71-44) and arch-rival Bellaire (62-59, OT) and then won the D-III District by upending Garaway (42-33) and St. Clairsville (37-35) to qualify for the Regional in Lancaster where they had an 18-game winning streak snapped by Oak Hill (63-46).

Members of the team were Ashley Bruney, Holly Gavarkavich, Danielle Neavin, Shannon Lucas, Stephanie Leonard, Jennifer Rice, Karley Yoder, Lindsay Coyne, Amy Bruney, Stephanie McIntosh, Shari Wilkinson, Lynsey Agnew, Hilary Smith, Amanda DiBacco, Lychel Jozwiak and Jenny Secrest. Appolloni’s assistant coaches were Tina Yates and Larry Duck while the team managers were Jill Winland, Amanda White and Pat Jobb.
