WHEELING — Playing on the fresh turf field at the newly constructed Wheeling Park Sports Complex, the Wheeling Park girls soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over visiting University Tuesday afternoon.

“Our girls came out very confident and in control of the game,” Park coach Carrie Hanna said. “They controlled the ball and they controlled the score. It was pleasant to see.”

It was just the second time that the Patriots (3-1-1) have played at the new complex this season, conveniently located right next to Wheeling Park High School. The complex was completed this spring and served as the home field for the Park softball team last school year.

“It’s beautiful,” Hanna said of the facility. “It’s a little bit wider than the field at (Wheeling Island) Stadium, but we like the extra space. Our team is very fast, so the extra space to work in is nice.

“It’s nice to have another venue and it’s been very nice for us to be able to come here right after school and not have to drive anywhere.”

As if to break in their new field, the Patriots came out of the gate red-hot against the Hawks Tuesday, going up 3-0 within the first 10 minutes of play with all three goals coming off the foot of junior striker Merritt Delk.

Seneca Heller added a fourth goal at the 22-minute mark and the Patriots took a 4-0 lead into the break.

Elli Reasbeck tallied a goal midway through the second half to arrive at the 5-0 final score.

The Patriots dominated possession throughout the entire game, allowing scant opportunities for the visitors’ offense.

“We kept the ball in our attacking half most of the game, our keeper only had to make one save,” Hanna said. “We did a good job keeping the ball and then combining and creating to finish our scoring opportunities as well.”

Even when both teams made mass substitutions in the second half, Park’s offensive pressure was unrelenting.

“It’s nice when everybody gets an opportunity to show what they’ve got and our girls capitalized on it,” Hanna said. “They came off the bench and our game didn’t really change. They’ve bought into our way of playing and it’s nice when they have that opportunity (to play), especially when we have three games in a week.”

Starting goalie Rylie Hicks only had to make one save to preserve the shutout. Backup Riley Perry was untested in relief.

Heller and Delk each added an assist and Audrey Lantz tallied two helpers.

Park will stay at the WP Sports Complex to host Brooke later today and then make the trek east to play at Morgantown on Saturday.
