WHEELING — The Wheeling Park golf team faced a couple of tough tests Wednesday both from their opponents and the course the Patriots were playing on.
Playing at the tough Jones Course at Speidel Golf Club, Wheeling Park hosted local foe St. Clairsville and Ohio power Carrollton in a match that challenged every golfer to be at their best. Carrollton won the match with a score of 318 while Wheeling Park topped the Red Devils by the slimest of margins, 337-338.
“The whole golf course is tough right now,” Park coach Don Headley said. “The golf course is firm though and when the Jones Course plays firm, it plays awful tough. Your short game and putting become more premium and that’s what a lot of young kids struggle with.”
Park held an advantage early on as the Koegler brothers, Campbell and Will, carried over their hot play from Monday’s win over John Glenn.
Campbell Koegler, a junior, led Park with 8-over 79. Senior Gavin Goodrich was right behind him with an 81.
Will Koeger, just a freshman, was leading the match after 15 holes, but broke down late and shot 84.
“(Will) blew up a little bit,” Headley said. “He had a flat tire on 16, 17 and 18. (Monday), he didn’t blow his tire out and shot 77 in the same predicament. It got him a little bit and that happens at the Jones Course.”
Andrew Pennybacker and Will Fuller tied at 93 for Park’s final score.
“We didn’t play the best (Wednesday),” Headley said. “We had some young kids playing and they got a taste of how the Jones Course can bite you.”
St. Clairsville was led by Brodi Foster’s 75 and Olivia Baker’s 80. The Red Devils also fell victim to a tough Jones Course with Evan Fix shooting 90 and Andrew Abel signing for 93.
Carrollton provided the match medalist with Jaxon Rinkes turning in a tidy 3-over 73. He was supported by Colton Moore (75), Micah Barking (84) and Cayden Reninger (85).
The Patriots will be back at the Jones Course next Thursday, August 25 for a match against visiting University.
“We’ll learn from this and get better,” Headley said. “It’s early in the season.”
