Prep Roundup: Maroon Knights, Cadets Win Season-Openers

AMBRIDGE, PA — Wheeling Central began what it hopes will be another memorable season with an impressive, 24-7 victory against Ambridge Friday night.

The Maroon Knights received big games from senior running back Lorenzo Ferrera, who rushed 11 times for 121 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Classmate Riley Watkins added 127 yards on 17 totes. He also caught a 23-yard touchdown from Payton Hildebrand to open the Central scoring.

Placekicker Eli Tucker connected on a 33-yard field goal.

Linsly 43, Amani Christian 0

PITTSBURGH — Atley Cowan tossed five touchdowns as the Cadets (1-0) rolled past the hosts.

Cowan completed 11 of 15 aerials for 254 yards. He connected with Alex Taylor from 13 yards out; Jy’Leik Johnson from 61; Nate Coleman from 24; Luca DiLorenzo from 36 and Malte Feil from 55 all before the first half ended.

Taylor also ran for 50 yards and a TD

Trinity 47, Hundred 24

MORGANTOWN — The Hornets and Warriors battled through three separate weather delays to finish their season-opener in Morgantown Friday night.

Playing in sloppy conditions, freshman running back Karter Parson ran for 162 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries to lead Hundred. Toby Michael carried the ball 10 times for 71 yards and Zach Wise had 47 yards and a touchdown on 13 totes.

Jeffrey Morris also scored on an 80-yard kick return for the Hornets.

Brooke 49, Ripley 6

RIPLEY — Brooke quarterback Braelyn Sperringer put on a one-man show in the Bruins’ season-opener, scoring six first-half touchdowns in a 49-6 rout at Ripley.

Sperringer threw for 188 yards and four touchdowns while running for 16 yards and two more scores. He threw scoring strikes to Gus Gilbert twice and one each to Anthony Bachinski and Garrett Hornick. Dante Tulenko also scored on the ground for the Bruins.

Barnesville 42, Meadowbrook 7

BYESVILLE — The Shamrocks made quick work of the Colts and won the Bill Dowler Trophy in the process thanks to an impressive running game.

All six of the Barnesville touchdowns came on the ground and they were spread between five different players. The lone player with multiple scores was Taison Starr.

Also finding the end zone were C.J. Hannahs, Salvador Almarez, Camden Carpenter and Koby Jones. Evan Lough was a perfect 6 of 6 on his PAT kicks.

River 28, Trimble 18

GLOUSTER — The Pilots ran their record to 2-0 on the season with a solid victory over perennial power Trimble Friday night.

Senior Ty Long had a big game for the Pilots. He scored on runs of 16 and 26 yards.

Junior quarterback Kabel Isaly got into the act in the second half when he rushed for a 35-yard touchdown. Earlier in the game, he hooked up with River Thompson on a 31-yard score.

SISTERSVILLE — A lightning delay could not slow down the Knights as they won big at home.
