CADIZ — St. Clairsville has itself in position to win yet another Buckeye 8 Athletic League golf title.

The Red Devils’ talented and youthful squad posted a score of 325, which was 36 shots better than host Harrison Central and 39 shots clear of Union Local.

St. Clairsville, which has claimed seven league titles, will seek a repeat crown on Aug. 30 on its home links at Belmont Hills Country Club.

“The goal coming into (Monday) was to have the lead going back to Belmont Hills, and we were able to accomplish that goals,” St. C. head coach Ryan Clifford said.

The Red Devils took charge of the tournament despite some early-round struggles, according to Clifford.

“I think our nerves may have gotten the best of us early,” Clifford said. “Every kid on the team bogeyed or doubled their first hole of the day, but once we settled down, we played much better.”

When the dust settled, the Red Devils were the only school in the field with two players to break 80.

Sophomores Evan Fix and Andrew Abel accomplished that and they sit first and third, respectively, in the race for the individual title.

Fix was steady throughout the round, shooting a 4-over, 76. Abel, meanwhile, is three shots back at 79 and just four shots back and in solo fourth place overall is sophomore southpaw Brodi Foster, who posted an 80.

Talented freshman Olivia Baker shot a 90 to round out the four scores that St. C. played.

“Our kids have a ton of time invested in the game and and sometimes they put too much pressure on themselves,” Clifford said. “This is our first championship round of the season and we don’t have a player above the tenth grade, so that plays a role.”

The host Huskies finished with a 361 and were led by Nash Roberts, who was solid throughout on his home course. He posted a 77 to sit in solo second.

Currently in fifth place is Indian Creek’s Noah Tweedy, who signed for an 81. Union Local senior Beezer Porter, who shot a round of 83, sits in sixth. The only other players in the field to break 90 were Cambridge’s Bradyn Gregg, who tallied a round of 86, and Harrison’s Heath Clay, who turned in an 89.

The remainder of the team standings are as follows: Cambridge (394), Indian Creek (423), Edison (433), Martins Ferry (434) and Beaver Local (488).
