St. C. Boys Open Season With 10-0 Win

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Coming off a season in which it set a program-record for wins (17) and advanced to the Division II ‘Sweet 16,’ St. Clairsville boys soccer head coach Jeff Roberts knew he had to replace eight talented seniors.

The Red Devils had no problems in their debut during the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s “Friday Night Futbol” as 10 different players found the back of the net in a 10-0 blanking of visiting Shenandoah on the artificial pitch inside Red Devil Stadium.

“We were trying to create passing lanes and give everyone an opportunity to score,” Roberts said. “Ten goals by 10 different players. All of our seniors scored and we got everyone on the roster in the game before halftime.

“I liked our possessions in the first half … our passing,” Roberts offered. “We’ve worked on creating passing lanes and making runs. We had some good runs tonight and we are really focused on getting the timing down on them. It’s still early and we haven’t had much time to practice yet.”

When asked what he didn’t like, Roberts didn’t wait long before replying.

“I don’t think there is one thing I didn’t like. The boys are playing with a great attitude. I think they are playing as a team as it shows on the score sheet,” he said. “It was a great team effort.”

The contest was the first for the Zeps who are in their initial year as an OHSAA member.

St. Clairsville, which lost to Chillicothe Unioto 3-2 in last year’s regional finals, didn’t waste any time in getting on the scoreboard.

“It’s a brand new program for Shenandoah. They were running their tails off,” Roberts noted of the Zeps. “They did what they could.”

Senior Jayson Clark made it 1-0 a mere 61 seconds into the match on an assist from talented freshman Parker Galloway. The net-finder came on the hosts’ first shot.

Galloway, a transfer from Indian Valley, recorded his first goal as a Red Devil in the seventh minute to make it 2-0. Senior Sean O’Grady notched the assist.

Luke Miller sent his own rebound into the cage early in the 11th minute and senior Maddox Tenner scored off an assist by Miller late in the same minute as the margin grew to 4-0.

O’Grady, a three-year veteran, dribbled the ball deep into the right corner of the box before unleashing a laser that found the opposite corner for a 5-0 reading in the 14th minute.

Senior Karl Kain had a highlight-reel goal late in the 15th minute as the bulge ballooned to 6-0.

His shot caromed off the post to the left of the goalkeeper and then trickled across the crease before clanking off the other post and across the goalline.

Goals by sophomores Carson Hendershot (Brennan Rice assist) and Hunter Harr (unassisted) and freshman Tyler Harris (unassisted) made it 9-0 at the half.

The Red Devils scored goals on 9-of-23 shooting in the first 40 minutes.

Brennan Rice made it 10-0 early in the second half, which was played with a running clock under the OHSAA’s mercy-rule, off an assist by Galloway.

Sophomore Brayden Kralovic stopped the only shot he faced before giving way to freshman Talen Rice.

St. Clairsville remains at home on Tuesday against Steubenville Central.

Starting at $2.99/week.
