WHEELING — The Linsly volleyball team looked like a machine Tuesday, sweeping a tri-meet at its home Stifel Fieldhouse against St. John and Cameron.
The Cadets (4-1) made quick work of the Irish (0-6) in their opening match, winning by scores of 25-1 and 25-8 and then defeated Cameron in the final match 25-5 and 25-7.
“They did well,” Linsly coach Ashlee Jividen said. “Our focus was just to stay focused on what we’re in control of and ball control’s the main thing.”
Linsly made virtually no errors in the opening set as the Cadets won the first 22 points against St. John on the strong serving of Ava Gainer.
“She killed it,” Jividen said. “She stayed focused and was very consistent. It’s going back to your routine that you have and getting (the ball) in (play). It’s all mental at that point.”
The Dragons defeated St. John in the middle match, 25-16, 16-25 and 25-23.
After dropping the first set against Cameron, the Irish trailed 6-3 in the second set. When St. John got the serve back, Addison Kovach went on a nine-point serving run that put the Irish up 12-6. St. John rode that momentum to take the second set and battle throughout the third before ultimately falling just short, 25-23.
The Cadets carried over their strong pay from the first match, defeating Cameron in the nightcap 25-5, 25-7.
Linsly once again had strong serving as Katerina Spanos recorded six aces, Alayna Cook had four and Gainer was credited with two.
“Serving did stand out, which was good,” Jividen said. “We needed to get our confidence back with that.”
Gainer also recorded 21 assists and Avery Sadlowski had seven kills.
Cameron opened a 5-2 lead at the beginning of set two, but the Cadets were able to regroup and go on a 13-point run with Spanos serving.
“I think there were a lot of errors that we made in those first five points and they just had to refocus and play their game,” Jividen said.
Linsly is back in action tonight at Union Local.
