BARNESVILLE — For the fourth consecutive year, the Milk Jug — the traveling volleyball trophy as part of the “Backyard Rivalry” between Barnesville and Union Local — will reside in the trophy case in Morristown. And for the second time this season, the state-ranked Jets have swept the neighboring Shamrocks.

Tuesday night inside “The Greenhouse” on the campus of Barnesville High School, Union Local (15-0) extended its dominance in the series by workmanlike scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-12 before a large gathering. The match took just 54 minutes.

With the trio of victories, the Jets — who are sixth in the latest Ohio Division II coaches poll and atop the OVAC Class 3A standings — have now won 42 straight sets to open the season.

“The girls kept their intensity level up and that was the key for us tonight,” Union Local head coach Kaye Sechrest said. “I was a little worried coming in because they are our rivals, but the girls kept a level head and played really well.”

The sweep was once again a team effort with everyone that saw action contributing in some way.

“The girls came to play and they played really well,” she continued. “They played as a team and, as a coach, that’s all you can ask for. Like I’ve said before, this is a really good group of girls.”

Ohio University recruit Torre Kildow charted 22 kills for the second night in a row. She also had five digs.

“I love beating our rivals,” Kildow said with a smile. “We were ready and excited to play tonight.”

Kelly Gress added 31 assists, nine digs and a pair of kills, while Julie Broussard had 17 digs. Olivia Wortman finished with half-a-dozen kills, three digs, two aces and a pair of assists. Emily Kellaway had eight digs; Emma Yager added six digs and Alli Briggs recorded four kills. Ella Pietranton finished with three digs and a pair of aces.

Most of Barnesville’s troubles came on the offensive side of the net where it only scored back-to-back points on its own serve three times in the entire match.

“That’s unfortunate for us, but that is a tough team we just played. That’s tough competition and when they score in chunks, that makes it even harder,” Barnesville head coach Kimberly Jarrett said. “Volleyball is such a mental sport but our girls are fighters. We might not have had a lot of points on the scoreboard, but there’s a lot of fight on this team.”

The Shamrocks (10-4) were led by Ava McFarland with 23 assists, four digs and two points. Halle Markovich chipped in four kills, a trio of blocks and two points, while Elle Thompson added five kills and four points.

Kynlie Cline logged 14 digs, and Blayne Carpenter and Darby Jones had five and four digs, respectively.

Union Local hosts another rival, St. Clairsville, on Thursday. Barnesville, meanwhile, travels down Ohio 800 to Woodsfield where Monroe Central awaits, also on Thursday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
