WHEELING — The Wheeling Central volleyball team posted a strong showing at home Wednesday afternoon, defeating visiting Shadyside in four sets.

After dropping the first set 25-17, the Maroon Knights (2-0) won a close second set 25-17 before storming to 25-12 and 25-14 wins in sets three and four.

“We went in knowing that Shadyside is a really good team and I think we just had to get the dust blown off,” first-year Central coach Kara Conners said. “We just had to find our groove and once we did that, the girls were a well-oiled machine.”

The Knights started strong in the opening set with the score tied at 13 midway through. From there, however, the Tigers took control of the set, scoring 12 of the final 16 points to win 25-17.

The second set looked to be heading in a similar direction when Shadyside went on a 5-1 scoring run to take an 11-9 lead. That was when the switch flipped for Central though as the Knights used two extended scoring runs to win 25-17.

Kamy Conners had a serving run of seven points in the set, followed by a four-point serving run by Nicole Reasbeck.

“Volleyball’s half mental and half physical,” Coach Conners said. “(Shadyside) has some good defense, has a good hitter and they’ve got a good coach. We just had to figure out how we could play around that.”

The Knights were in full control of the match following the second set. They exploded out to a 13-1 lead in set three, eventually winning 25-12 on a powerful spike by Reasbeck.

“We got our momentum,” Conners said. “Once we found our rhythm, we stuck with that and kept that going.”

Shadyside opened a 4-0 lead in the fourth set, but Central would eventually go on a 17-1 scoring run that put any hopes of a Tiger comeback to bed. That period included a 14-point service run by Reasbeck.

“I think Nicole played fantastic, she is an all-around good player,” Conners said. “It’s a team sport though so she’s only as good as the five others on the court. I give them all credit.”

Camy Conners led the Knights with 17 kills and nine aces alongside 10 digs. Reasbeck finished with 16 digs, 14 kills and eight aces.

Alexis Hood had a team-high 15 assists with six digs and two aces while Lainey Peters had eight assists, two digs and two kills. Ashlyn Knights had four blocks and a like number of digs.

Dangerous outside hitter Gentry Brown led the Tigers with 16 kills and 13 digs while also registering two blocks. Ali Weatherspoon had a team-high 14 assists.

Wheeling Central will continue its homestand later today with a visit from the Bellaire Big Reds.
