MORGANTOWN — Despite trailing 20-7 in the second quarter, Wheeling Park stormed back against University to win 55-33.
“Tribute to University, they kind of took it to us in the first half,” Wheeling Park head coach Chris Daugherty told the Dominion Post after the game. “I thought we had a slow start. We have done that twice now. We can’t afford to do that against good teams.”
Park (3-1) was led by quarterback Brett Phillips, who scored five total touchdowns, three through the air and two on the ground. Phillips broke off a 59-yard run on a fake punt for Park’s first touchdown and then had long touchdown passes to Jerrae Hawkins (62 yards) and Will James (92 yards). Phillips also ran in a score from five yards and threw another 20-yard touchdown to James, who finished with 118 yards on four grabs.
Hawkins also had a 79-yard pick-six on defense as Park scored 28 unanswered points in the middle of the game.
Zac Lydick ran for 74 yards and a touchdown and Gavin Washington added a 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
University quarterback Luke Hudson had a record-breaking performance with 504 passing yards and five touchdown strikes.
