SHADYSIDE — Streaks were made to be broken and Friday night unbeaten Barnesville used both big plays and long drives to get a long-time monkey off their respective backs.
Senior quarterback C.J. Hannahs had another huge game accounting for 262 yards and three touchdowns, in just two quarters of action, while the defense limited Shadyside to negative-52 rushing yards, and the Shamrocks broke an eight-game losing streak to Shadyside dating back to 2005 with a lop-sided 38-0 victory over the struggling, and winless, Tigers at Fleming Field.
The victory moves coach Blake Allen’s Barnesville squad to 4-0 on the campaign with a battle of unbeatens slated for next Friday night in Hannibal against 4-0 River. Meanwhile, interim coach Mike Kernik watched his Shadyside squad drop to 0-4 and will host Wheeling Central that same night.
The win gave the Shamrocks their first 4-0 start to the season since beginning 7-0 in 2011. On the other side of the coin it marks Shadyside’s first 0-4 start to a season since 2015, a season in which the Tigers rebounded to qualify for the Ohio playoffs. The Orange and Black have made the playoffs every year since 2000 with the exception of 2004.
“We know what is ahead and the message all week has been to stay focused on this one because the town was already buzzing about what is coming up next week,” Allen admitted. “I am proud of how the kids came out (Friday) and took care of business.
“Now we can get ready for River, and I can tell you the kids and coaches are already excited for the challenge.”
After a three-and-out on its first possession of the night the ‘Rocks got rolling the second time they had the ball. Moving 68 yards on 11 plays with junior Taison Starr covering the final three at the 3:13 mark of the opening quarter. Evan Lough’s first PAT made it 7-0.
A Shadyside punt put the visitors back in business at the enemy 49 a short time later and Barnesville needed just one play with Hannahs hitting a wide-open Starr deep down the middle the field for the 51-yard scoring bomb at 1:10 to make it 14-0.
The Shamrocks added to the lead after sophomore Casey Carpenter’s interception put the ball at the Tigers’ 33. Hannahs gained 17 yards on first down before traveling the final 16 on the very next play as the lead ballooned to 21-0 just four seconds into the second period.
The Tigers finally got the offense moving early in the second frame, moving 78 yards in 13 plays before turning the ball over on downs at the Barnesville five on an incomplete pass.
The visitors then embarked on another long drive, covering the 95 stripes in 10 plays, including a 38-yard touchdown run from Hannahs at the 3:36 mark. Lough, who was 4 of 4 on PAT’s in the half, booted a 29-yard field goal with six seconds showing in the opening half to send the teams to the locker room with a 31-0 score.
In all, the Shamrocks had a whopping 324 yards and 16 first downs in the first half alone.
The only score of the second half came with 10:15 to play when Carpenter, the back-up quarterback, lofted a 34-yard strike to Jason Castello with Lough’s conversion capping the scoring at 38-0.
“We have been harping on the guys to keep getting better and they have done that,” Allen added. “This is still a pretty young football team, and we have to avoid getting complacent. There are things to improve on, including the first possession of the game when we went three-and-out, but fortunately when that has happened the defense has been outstanding.
“The other big thing is that with a smaller roster than we are used to, we have to be able to stay healthy and so far we have been able to avoid any major injuries.”
While the Tigers’ offense struggled once again, finishing the contest with just 103 total yards, Shadyside did turn the corner on penalties with just one for 10 yards on the night. Kernik’s crew had been flagged for at least 100 yards in penalties in each of their initial three outings.
“Coach Allen does a great job with them, and they are always a fundamentally sound football team,” Kernik said. “My hat is off to them.
“There are definitely things we need to continue to figure out and work on, but I am proud of how we cut down on the penalties in this one. We are going to have take the little things when we can. I am really proud we played a cleaner game.
“We just need to focus on getting better and working on what we need to improve on and I have to be better as a coach.”
