WHEELING — St. Clairsville did once again what it’s done basically all season and that’s win a golf tournament.
The Red Devils got their final, official tuneup before Monday’s Division II sectional at Cadiz Country Club at Oglebay Park’s sun-drenched Crispin Course Wednesday by winning the Ohio Valley Golf League championship with a solid score of 315.
“Our kids played very solidly once again,” St. C. head coach Ryan Clifford said. “Winning this tournament is a very nice way to enter the postseason, but we realize we’re going to have to continue to play as well, if not better, if we hope to extend our season beyond Monday. ”
This marks the third league and/or conference championship for St. C. this season. They’ve already won the Buckeye 8 and just eight days ago on this very course at Oglebay captured another OVAC Class 4A crown.
Actually, the Red Devils shot seven shots better in the OVAC.
Similar to the OVAC, however, the same player paced the Red Devils and that was sophomore southpaw Brodi Foster, who shot an even-par round of 71 on Wednesday, which was four strokes better than last week. He was the tournament champion, winning by four shots over Monroe Central’s Zander Potts.
“I had a couple of putts not fall for me, but I was able to recover well and overall, I played pretty well,” Foster said. “I think I’ve got every hole on this course down (since we’ve played here so many times) except for hole No. 1 because I either bogey or double it every time.”
Foster, who helps to lead an all-underclass squad, is excited for what lies ahead in the sectional next week.
“I feel confident going into the postseason,” Foster said. “We’ve played really well as a team for being such a young team. Will (Foster) and Saul (Crist) provided great leadership last year, and it’s been kind of hard at times to play without that leadership, but overall, we’ve performed well.”
Sophomore Evan Fix signed for a 78 for the Devils, while classmate Andrew Abel was third on the team with an 84. Freshman Olivia Baker, who will not play with the St. C. boys in the postseason, but instead will take part in the OHSAA’s girls tournament next week, rounded out the Devils scoring with an 84.
Baker actually produced the tournament’s lone eagle when she drove the green and sank a putt on No. 18.
Despite not having a player earn his or her way onto the All-OVGL team, Barnesville finished second by a shot over Monroe Central.
The Seminoles were led by the aforementioned Potts, who was also named the league’s player of the year. He shot a 75.
Union Local, which finished fourth in the team standings with a score of 344, was led by senior Beezer Porter, who posted a round of 79 to earn All-Tournament.
Martins Ferry produced a pair of All-OVGL players in freshman Nolan Zambori and senior Joe Green. Each shot a round of 79.
