University Upsets Brooke in OVAC Quarterfinal
WELLSBURG — Matches are won on the field and not on the stat sheet.
The Brooke boys’ soccer team controlled the ball against University, however, the third-seeded Bruins were not able to find the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Green-and-Gold, the sixth-seeded Hawks scored on a breakaway late in the first half to upset the Bruins, 1-0, in a Class 5A OVAC Tournament quarterfinal Monday evening on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.
“We controlled every aspect of the game besides the score,” Brooke (8-5-1) head coach Joe Pepe said. “We dominated the game.”
University’s Dylan Wintle tallied the lone goal of the match with 6:30 remaining to be played in the first half.
“That is all it takes,” University (4-7-2) head coach Michael Smith said.
Foster Rowan was credited with the assist.
The goal came on the visitors second shot on goal. Brooke had one at that point.
“We did not take them for granted,” Pepe said. “Coming into this game, we saw their record of 3-7-2. They are a good team. They did a tremendous job.
“Take nothing away from them, but we outplayed them, but these things happen. I wish them luck the rest of the way.
“We have things we are going to have to work on tomorrow. Now, we have to get ready for the second season.”
With the win, University will now take on No. 1 seed Big Red at 6 p.m. Wednesday on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium. Big Red had a bye.
After the visitors scored, the hosts really stepped up their level of play.
“I have to give credit to Brooke, they are a very good team,” Smith said. “Coming into the game, it was looking at a mirror image of ourselves.
“They were aggressive. They won the 50-50 balls. They worked hard. They had the better of the play in the second half.”
Connor Montgomery made 11 saves in goal for the boys from Monongalia County.
Jeremy Gilchrest stopped two shots for the boys from Brooke County.
Both goalies also intercepted balls in the box.
“Our guys were able to hold on,” Smith said. “Our goalkeeper played a great game. He made some fantastic saves throughout the game.”
Two of those saves came with less than eight minutes left in the match. The Hawks were called for a foul in the penalty box, and the Bruins were awarded a penalty kick.
Ben Ferguson took the kick, however, Montgomery made the save, and the junior followed that up by making another save on the rebound.
Brooke outshot University, 17-4. The Bruins had a shot hit the post with about four minutes left in the first half, and the shot off the rebound hit the side of the goal.
The Bruins recorded 11 shots on goal, while the Hawks had three.
“Brooke is disciplined,” Smith said. “They play hard. They are technically sound. They did exactly what we expected them to do.”
University took 15 goal kicks, while Brooke took four. The boys in green had a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
“They like to box out,” Pepe said. “They put a lot of legs inside the box.
“These things happen. This is a hard one to lose. We played an excellent game Saturday against the No. 2 team in the state. We lost, 2-1.
“The sun will come up tomorrow. This is a tough pill to swallow.
“I am proud of the kids. We just could not get one into the net.”
Brooke is scheduled to play Beaver Local at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home.
Morgantown — the No. 4 seed — shut out No. 5 seed Parkersburg South, 5-0, in the other Class 5A quarterfinal Monday at Pony Lewis Field inside JW Ruby stadium. Morgantown will now play Wheeling Park in the semifinals Wednesday on the road.
