Bruins Rout Bears, 45-0

NEW MANCHESTER — Mac McLean and his staff knew Hunter Mozingo was improving in the role of quarterback from what they had seen from the junior in practice.

Everyone at the Bears Den Friday night got to see just how much the junior, who was thrust into the role by the Week 2 injury to Braelyn Sperringer, has grown into the position.

Mozingo threw for 160 yards and ran for 104 more yards and a touchdown, all in the first half, leading the Bruins to a 45-0 win over Oak Glen.

“Hunter did a great job,” McLean said. “It was good to see, and we noticed it in practice the last couple of days. He was throwing crisp balls and he was executing. He got that first start a couple weeks ago, got the jitters out of his system and settled in and now he’s playing like an upperclassman.”

The Bruins offense racked up 481 total yards, breaking game open in the second quarter with a 24-point onslaught that turned a 7-0 lead after the first quarter into a 31-0 lead at halftime. The Bruins, now 4-2, scored on five-straight possessions.

“It was a good night for us, I’m proud of the way we executed and proud of the way we played,” McLean said. “I know Oak Glen is really young, they have a lot of freshmen on the field. I can also tell they’re going to be a team to watch (in the future). We’ve been there … they’re going through some growing pains.

“We played great in all facets of the game.”

As good as the offense was, the Brooke defense was even better, holding the Golden Bears to a net of just three yards, negative yardage in the second half, and no first downs in the game.

“Coach (Jeremy) Sadler has done a very good job all year with the defense, coach (Tom) Cole, his assistant, has done a great job as well,” McLean. “Our defense has played very well.”

The Golden Bears just simply could not get much of anything going.

“We are so beat up, we had some guys missing,” Oak Glen coach Doug Taylor said. “That doesn’t take anything away from Brooke, they have a very good football team. We just can’t get healthy and couldn’t get anything going offensively. We kept putting our defense behind the eight-ball. It was just one of those games, they beat us in pretty much every facet.

“When you play the bigger schools, you have to be ready to play them and with our youth and inexperience, we just weren’t able to handle them.”

Gavin Moore, who finished with 60 yards on the ground, opened the scoring with his first of two touchdowns on an 11-yard run.

Jace Campinelli scored on a 1-yard plunge on a fourth and goal in the second quarter, then Moore added his second score on a 6-yard run to make it 21-0.

Chase Hile nailed a 39-yard field goal to make it 24-0, then Mozingo broke free for a 48-yard scoring run in the final minute of the half for the 31-0 advantage.

Dante Turenko scored on a 11-yard run in the third quarter. Freshman Will Scott, who played most of the second half at quarterback, ran for a 15-yard score in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Brooke returns home for a key Class AAA showdown with John Marshall.

“We know the next two are huge opponents for us,” McLean said. “Next week is a very big game for us. We want to play in the post season and we have to show up and play and execute if we’re going to reach that goal.

“We have to keep getting better every day if we’re going to play in that second season.”

Oak Glen travels to rival East Liverpool Thursday for the battle of the bridge game.
