MORRISTOWN — Union Local vs. Shenandoah … part 3 is officially scheduled.
The Jets and Zeps both took care of their respective business Tuesday evening on their home courts in the semi-final round of the OVAC volleyball tournament to earn a spot in Saturday morning’s 3A title game, which will be played at 11 a.m. in Morristown.
However, before each could shift focus to the rubber match, plenty of business remained. Union Local — for the 20th time this season — won by virtue of a sweep, handing fourth-seeded Caldwell a 25-22, 25-14 and 25-16 setback before a loud and large crowd in the Hangar.
“Caldwell was really, really good and very young and they gave us a battle,” UL head coach Kaye Sechrest said. “We’re excited to advance and now we have to come back in (for practice) and do some tweaks and get ready for Saturday.”
The Redskins definitely gave the Jets all they wanted and then some in the first set. Caldwell had the lead at 22-21 before the Jets closed with a flurry to win the set and grab the match’s momentum.
“We gave away seven serves in the first set and were still competitive,” Caldwell head coach Alexis Watson said. “We couldn’t get out of one rotation and they went up by 10, and it looked to me like we got content with competing in the first set.”
While the service errors were certainly costly, the Redskins were able to make their biggest push when they caught Union Local with senior standout Torre Kildow in the back row, negating her big-swing ability.
“The girls stepped it up (when Kildow was in the back row) in the third game,” Sechrest said. “I don’t know if we played our best game, but Caldwell had a lot to do with that because they really played well.”
In the second set, the Jets left little doubt when they raced out to a 10-0 lead to open the set. Kildow spent more time in the front row and planted spike after spike at the feet of Redskins’ defenders.
As Sechrest pointed out, the Jets seemingly adjusted to Kildow being in the back row in the third set and never allowed the Redskins to get on any type of extended scoring run.
“The first (set) could have gone either way and if it had gone (Caldwell’s) way, who knows what would have happened?” Sechrest said.
The Jets received another brilliant hitting performance from Kildow. The Ohio University commit recorded 29 kills to fuel the attack. She also had nine digs and two aces. Olivia Wortman added eight kills and nine digs.
Kelly Gress handed out an impressive 41 assists and posted 12 digs. Julie Broussard was charted for 19 digs. Emma Yager had five digs and three kills, while Emily Kellaway had six digs.
Caldwell received 10 kills and nine digs from Chesne Long, while sophomore Gwyn Lori – an All-Ohioan in track and field — posted seven kills and 14 digs. Josie Lori posted 13 digs, while Sophia Marshall had 27 assists and six digs.
Shenandoah def. Buckeye Trail
SARAHSVILLE — Second-seeded Shenandoah punched its ticket to the finals with a 25-7, 25-19, 25-18 sweep of third-seeded Buckeye Trail.
The Zeps (20-1) were led by junior Mya Leach with eight kills, 12 assists and 16 digs. Freshman Brenna Leach collected seven kills and six digs; junior Heather Merry had 10 assists, 10 digs and three aces; senior Charli Wickham had five aces and four kills; and junior Kadence Noll had 8 digs and three aces.
