Park Girls Shut Out Washington

WHEELING — The Wheeling Park girls soccer team defeated visiting Washington 5-0 Saturday.

Merritt Delk and Lauren Gongola both scored two goals and goalie Ryleigh Hicks made five saves in net for the shutout.

Audrey Lantz scored the Patriots’ other goal and added an assist while Adlie Abraham tallied two helpers. Melk and Seneca Heller each had an assist.

Magnolia plays in tournament

PARKERSBURG — Magnolia volleyball went 2-1-1 at a tournament at Parkersburg South on Saturday.

The Blue Eagles started their day with a tie against the hosts (25-19, 24-26). They then defeated Ripley (25-17, 25-22), lost to Huntingon (19-25, 20-25) and finally topped John Marshall (25-8, 25-20).

Magnolia’s stats leaders on the day were Jenna Blain with 24 kills, Sydney Knight with 84 assists and Julia Lilze with 30 digs.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

UNC Pembroke 17, Wheeling 16

WHEELING — UNC Pembroke scored the only touchdown of the second half with 9:08 remaining in the fourth quarter and spoiled the Cardinals’ homecoming with a 17-16 win Saturday.

Josh Jones’ eight-yard touchdown to Faheem Diaab was the only score from either team after halftime and put UNC Pembroke up by a single point over Wheeling (4-2, 3-2 MEC). Wheeling kicker Matt Greenwood had a chance to take the lead in the final minute, but missed a 40-yard field goal.

The Cardinal offense managed just one touchdown, a run by Sy Alli IV, and kicked three field goals — including a 49-yarder by Greenwood that established a new program record.

Alli ran for 126 yards on the ground while quarterback Javon Davis threw for 107 with an interception.

Tyreke King racked up 11 total tackles with four sacks for Wheeling on defense.

Concord 45, West Liberty 28

WEST LIBERTY — A three-point game got away from the Hilltoppers in the fourth quarter as Concord scored three touchdowns in the final frame to pull away from West Liberty.

WLU (3-3, 2-3 MEC) scored 21 points in the second quarter for a 21-21 tie at halftime and only trailed 24-21 entering the fourth quarter.

Concord quarterback Jack Mangel threw for 444 yards and five touchcowns.

West Liberty running back Quincy Wimbih ran for 211 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Rudy Garcia passed for 124 yards and a touchdown. Week-one starter Jamie Diven attempted five passes, completing two with an interception.

Grove City 55, Bethany 7

BETHANY — The Bison were outclassed by the visiting Wolverines Saturday.

Grove City scored 27 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second for a 41-0 halftime lead.

The Bison (1-4, 0-4 PAC) got on the board when quarterback Marquicw Robinson threw a touchdown to De’Vaught McWhorter in the third quarter. McWhorter finished with 11 catches for 127 yards and a score.
