WHEELING - March Madness is upon us. Well, at least it will be Wednesday when the 2023 Mountain East Conference Basketball Tournaments - men's and women's - kick off a 5-day-and-night stay inside downtown WesBanco Arena.
West Liberty University (25-3 overall, 20-2 MEC) is once again the top seed in the men's bracket, while defending NCAA Division II national champion Glenville State (26-2, 20-2) tops the women's field.
The women's side of the tournament tips things off on Wednesday at noon when No. 7 Concord (12-16, 9-13) faces No. 10 Notre Dame (7-21, 6-16). The afternoon twinbill also includes Davis & Elkins (7-19, 7-15) and Frostburg State (8-20, 6-16) meeting in the Nos. 8-9 matchup at approximately 2:30.
It's the men's turn to hit the court Wednesday night as No. 10 Wheeling University (6-22, 4-18) meets No. 7 Glenville State (16-12, 12-10) in the 6 o'clock opener. No. 8 Concord (14-14, 10-12) faces No. 9 Alderson Broaddus (11-16, 9-13) at approximately 8:30.
Action resumes Thursday with four women's quarterfinal contests, starting at noon as W.Va. State meets the Concord-Notre Dame victor at noon, with No. 6 Wheeling (14-14, 12-10) going against No. 3 Charleston (21-7, 16-6) in the matinee's second game at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The top-seeded Pioneers face the Concord-Alderson Broaddus winner at 6. The nightcap has No. 5 West Liberty (17-11, 15-7) and No. 4 Fairmont State (22-8, 16-6) meeting at approximately 8:30.
The semi finals are set for Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m., with the championship game scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
Quarterfinal action on the men's side of the bracket on Friday has No. 2 Fairmont State (22-6, 17-5) tangling with the winner of the Glenville State-Wheeling encounter at noon. No. 3 Charleston (19-9, 16-6) meets No. 6 Davis & Elkins (18-10, 12-10) at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The evening doubleheader has the top-seeded Hilltoppers playing the winner of the Concord-Alderson Broaddus matchup. In the finale, No. 4 W.Va. State (20-8, 14-8) faces No. 5 Notre Dame (16-12, 12-10).
The semi finals are scheduled for 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the title tilt on Sunday at 5 p.m.
