KINGWOOD -- Wheeling Park finished as a runner up in Saturday's W.Va. Class AAA Region I wrestling tournament at Preston High School. The defending state champion Patriots finished with 215.5 points, which was 46 behind University.
Wheeling Park will be sending 10 individuals to Huntington in two weeks for the state tournament, including Region I champions Jack Lowe (132), Adam Carman (138), Bradyn Lucas (144), Quinton Velas (150) and Jerome Maynard (165).
John Marshall, which finished third with 172 points, has nine qualifiers, but only one Region I titlist in Zander Ward (113).
Brooke's Region I champion Tyler Wise (190) leads five Bruins to Huntington.
Class A/AA
FAIRMONT -- Twenty-three Ohio Valley wrestlers will be heading to Huntington.
Oak Glen leads this local contingent with eight individuals, including Region I champions Logan Davis (113), Hayden Lamb (132) and Braxton Dlugopolski (165).
Cameron, the defending Class A state champs, has five qualifiers and are led by Region I titlist Adam Angel (170).
Wheeling Central has two state qualifiers, with Region I champ Isaac Martin (215) leading the way.
Tyler Consolidated has five qualifiers, while Weir has three and Magnolia two.
Barnesville wins MOVL title
CONNORVILLE -- The Shamrocks are bringing home another championship.
Already with the OVAC Tournament and Dual Championship tucked away, the Shamrocks added another award when they won the Mid Ohio Valley League championship with 169.5 points, which was 20 more than runner-up Caldwell.
The Shamrocks claimed the individual title in five weight classes. Their champions were Conner Wilson (106), Hines Ford (132), Skyler King (144), Reese Stephen (150) and Karson Milhoan (157). The Shamrocks also had two runner ups in Ayden Andrews (120) and Koby Jones (165).
Runner-up Caldwell had two champions -- Colby Langley (165) and Marshal Sayre (190).
Buckeye Local, which finished third with 138.5 points, had two champions in Tristan Palmer (120) and Chase McFadden (175).
Shenandoah was fourth with 131 points. The Zeps prevailed in three weight classes thanks to Tristen Rossiter (113), Drake Kanyuch (126) and Carson Cline (215).
River's lone champion was Marshall Bier at 275 and Bridgeport's lone winner was Mason Aberts at 138.
Martins Ferry wins Buckeye 8
CAMBRIDGE -- The Purple Riders accumulated 237.5 points to fend off Beaver Local, which was the seven-time defending champion in the event, by 29.5 points.
Fueling the Riders, who had never won a Buckeye 8 mat team title, were two individual champions.
Capturing titles were Dylan Ward at 120 and Jonathan Rossano at 132.
Beaver Local had three champions, including Robert Buchheit (126), Justin Cox (150) and Dylan Ferguson (157).
Edison finished third in the team standings with 144.5 points. The Wildcat champions were Jayden Clancey (190) and Ethan Waggoner (165).
East Liverpool was fourth with 142 points. Its champions were Tristian Eckles (113) Damon Stansbury (144) and Eric Williams (175).
Indian Creek's lone champion was Brock Pendleton at 106. The host Bobcats had a champion at 135 in Clayton Myers.
Harrison Central, which was sixth in the team standings, had two champions in Lucas and Landen Thomas at 215 and 285, respectively. Both won by pin.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Tusky Valley 51, Martins Ferry 44
ZOAR - Martins Ferry had second-seeded Tusky Valley on the ropes into the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon in a Division III sectional co-final.
However, the Trojans, who trailed by 13 after three quarters, proceeded to outscore the Purple Riders, 22-2 in the fourth to pull out the victory.
Lacey Levengood and Leah Bourquin each had 11 to lead the Trojans in the scoring column.
Martins Ferry, which finishes at 14-10, was led by sophomore Lindsey Best's 15 points. Classmate Lindse Sidon added 11.
Division IV
Strasburg 49, Monroe Central 39
STRASBURG - Monroe Central saw its season come to a close at the hands of the Tigers Saturday afternoon in a Division IV sectional co-final.
The Seminoles, who finished with a 17-7 record, were outscored at the foul line, 29-9.
Senior Hallie Bommer led the Seminoles with 15 points, while Jacey English added 10.
Strasburg got 24 points from Riley Thomas and 18 from Sofia Secrest. Those two combined for a 24 of 27 effort at the foul line. Secrest made all 12 of her attempts from the stripe in the fourth.
Division II
Indian Creek 51, Philo 20
WINTERSVILLE -- The third-seeded Redskins didn't waste much time with the Electrics in their sectional final.
Kylie Anderson scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Wheeling Park 90, Martinsburg 59
WHEELING -- Wheeling Park picked up its 14th win in 21 starts Saturday afternoon, handing Martinsburg a decisive loss.
The Patriots were led by talented sophomore guard Aiden Davis. He hit eight treys and led all scorers with 36 points. Mykel Davis added 16 points and completed the double-double with 11 rebounds.
Bridgeport, W.Va. 48, John Marshall 37
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - Brennan Sobutka led the Monarchs with 17 points. Caody Hartman added 10.
SWIMMING
LANCASTER, PA. -- Linsly wrapped up its season with a strong showing in the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship at Franklin & Marshall.
The Cadets' girls 400 free relay placed seventh in the B Final of the 400 free relay with a team of Anna Norman, Berta Roca, Bea Fauro and Liv Torner. The squad posted a 3:45.16.
Overall, Linsly finished 16th in the girls team standings with 114 points. The boys were 21st with 142 points.
