Straughn, McCrate Headed To OVAC Hall Of Fame

WHEELING – Two more inductees have been selected for enshrinement into the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Hall of Fame, joining the six previous members announced for the Class of 2023.

Bishop Donahue’s Shawn Straughn and Barnesville’s Tim McCrate have been selected as the Hall of Fame honorees from the decade of the 1980s.

Those already tabbed for the 2023 HOF ceremonies include Barnesville’s Jennie Castle and Union Local’s Koel Davia representing the decade of the 2000s, while Magnolia’s Justin Fox and Madonna’s Max Nogay are the selections for the decade of the 2010s.

In addition, the enshrines from the 1990s are Jessica Hines of Barnesville and Martins Ferry’s Fred Ray.

Below is a capsule look at each of the Class of 1980 honorees:

TIM McCRATE, Barnesville (Class of 1989) — Be it in high school or on the Division I collegiate level, McCrate was a champion.

For the Shamrocks, he was the OHSAA Class AA state champion in the 110 high hurdles in the sizzling time of 14.18 He was also the Bellaire Relays kingpin (besting Wheeling Park great Anthony Reed) and also the gold medalist in the OVAC championships.

As a junior, McCrate made his presence felt in the state meet. He was runner-up in the high hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.

As a sophomore, McCrate placed fourth in the state high hurdles.

His great prep success earned McCrate a scholarship to The Ohio State University, where he again tasted championship success.

As a Buckeye senior, McCrate captured the Big Ten 110-meter high hurdles outdoor crown.

That coveted title came on the heels of a second-place finish in the Big Ten indoor championships.

His senior campaign was the icing on the cake of a sparkling Buckeye track career. McCrate placed in both Big Ten championship meets as a sophomore and junior.

McCrate was no one-sport wonder.

He also excelled on the gridiron for the Shamrocks, on both sides of the ball.

He was a big-play wide receiver as well as defensive back. McCrate earned special mention All-Ohio honors as a senior as well as first-team All-Eastern District laurels.

He was a special mention All-Valley Big School honoree as well as honorable mention All-OVAC. McCrate is also an enshrined in the Eastern District Cross Country & Track Hall of Fame.

He is currently the athletic director at Dover High School.

SHAWN STRAUGHN, Bishop Donahue (Class of 1986) – Straughn become a fixture in the Bishops’ starting lineups in both football and basketball as a sophomore. He blossomed into a star in both sports during the ensuing three years.

On the gridiron, Straughn was a three-year regular at safety and a two-year starter at quarterback.

He pilfered six passes from his secondary post as a junior and five more as a senior, a season in which he made 35 solo tackles and assisted on 28 others.

Straughn was accorded first-team All-State and All-Valley honors at safety as a senior.

That same season, Straughn also enjoyed a prolific campaign as the Bishops’ quarterback. He passed for more than 1,000 yards while also rushing for seven touchdowns.

He was also a superb punter.

Straughn was even more of a force in basketball, earning a starting spot at center as a sophomore.

The athletic post averaged 18.5 points and 11.7 rebounds for his career.

The Bishops posted an impressive 56-15 record during those three years.

As a junior, Straughn helped carry Donahue to a banner 23-3 mark en route to capturing the West Virginia Class A championship.

He was selected to the Class A All-Tournament Team.

During that season, Straughn averaged 20 points and 11.3 rebounds a game.

He was rewarded by being tabbed first-team All-Valley and second-team All-State.

As a senior, Straughn averaged 23.3 points and 14.1 rebounds a contest. Those numbers gained him first-team All-State honors while being named captain of the All-Valley Small School squad.

The multi-talented Bishop was also nominated for the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Team.

The two-time All-OVAC selection finished his prep career with 1,246 points.

Straughn continued his hoop exploits at Wheeling Jesuit in impressive fashion.

When he completed his Cardinal career, Straughn was the school’s all-time leading rebounder (1,110 caroms) and second in scoring (1,920 points). He was a three-time All-West Virginia Conference selection to go with a pair of WVC All-Tournament honors.

His hoop prowess helped lead the Cardinals to their best-ever season, that coming in 1988 when Wheeling advanced to the NAIA national tournament quarterfinals.

In 1989-90, Straughn was named Wheeling Jesuit’s Athlete-of-the Year.

Moreover, he was just the second Wheeling Jesuit player to have his jersey retired.

The 19th annual OVAC Hall of Fame Induction will be held at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling on Saturday, Aug. 12.

The OVAC Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by Robinson Automotive Group, will announce members of the Class of 2023 every two weeks for the next couple of months.

In two weeks, the honorees from the 1970s will be announced.
