Wheeling Park Boys Romp Past Brooke

Aiden Davis Breaks 2 Longtime School Records

Wheeling Park’s K.J. Demko (32) shoots for two points during Tuesday night’s W.Va. Class AAAA Section I, Region I tournament game against Brooke. He was one of six Patriots to reach double figures in a 92-60 romp.

WHEELING — Aiden Davis had a night to remember Tuesday night as Wheeling Park set up a fourth meeting with Morgantown.

With six three-point goals and a game-high 24 points, Davis, just a sophomore, broke a pair of long standing Patriot records in a 92-60 romp in a W.Va. Class AAAA Section I, Region I boys tournament game inside the ‘Palace on the Hill’ high atop the Friendly City.

“He is special,” Wheeling Park (16-7) head coach Michael Jebbia said of Davis. “He puts the time in and, not only is a special player, but he has a very high IQ for the game.”

During the third quarter, the 5-10 sharp-shooter broke one of Jebbia’s records when he surpassed the single-season point mark for a sophomore set by his head coach back of 453 back in 1996. Then, in the fourth quarter, Davis reached the top of the made three-pointers ladder with his 86th which bumped former all-stater Anthony Reed from the top. That mark had stood since 1989.

“It feels amazing. I want to thank my teammates for giving me the looks (at the basket),” Davis said, “It feels awesome right now.”

With the records already surpassed, all Davis wants to do is win.

“I don’t like to think about records and numbers and that kind of stuff, all I care about is winning.”

Jebbia couldn’t be more proud of the way Davis has handled the success he has had.

“He only took two shots in the first half and had six points. They were face-guarding him but he let the game come to him,” Jebbia said. “That’s what good players do.”

Jebbia said Davis had an idea about the three-point record, but it is still an unbelievable accomplishment.

“That’s really difficult because he does so much more for us,” Jebbia said of Davis breaking Reed’s mark. “He brings the ball up the floor and runs our offense. Teams are guarding against him shooting 3s and he still does it every game.”

The Bruins (10-13) had a good game plan to slow the tempo down, but couldn’t convert point-wise due to poor shooting. However, it picked up in the second quarter when they banged five treys, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the high-flying Patriots.

“It’s a matter of depth for us. We had a good game plan and it worked, but we started out slow shooting from the floor,” Brooke head coach Adam Shinsky said of a 1-for-8 start. “The slow down offense kept us in it for a while, but we couldn’t hit a shot early on.

“Park is really good. I don’t think they get the credit they deserve,” Shinsky added. “I know all of their coaches and I wish them good luck.”

The future is bright for the Bruins, however.

“It really didn’t hit me until I made the starting lineup that we start junior, junior, junior, junior, junior and our first guy off the bench is a junior,” Shinsky noted. “We’ll take some time off and then get back to work for next season.”

Davis led all scorers with two dozen markers, which included half-a-dozen bonus bombs. He was joined in double digits by five teammates as Mykel Davis added 19 and K.J. Demko had 14. Amare Johnson added 11 off the bench while Brett Phillips and Cole Wilkinson evenly divided 20.

“To have six double figure scorers is outstanding,” Jebbia said of the balanced scoring attack. “We shot really well tonight.”

Leyton Toepfer had 21 points for Brooke while Peyton Toepfer finished with 10. Charlie Fuscardo added nine and Nathan Kimball eight.

Wheeling Park travels to Morgantown Thursday for the Region I co-final.

“We know their personnel and they know ours, so there won’t be any secrets,” Jebbia said of the matchup. “We’ve played them three times and played them tough the last two.”
