Prep Roundup: Wheeling Park Boys Win Monarch Relays; Girls a Strong 2nd

MOUNDSVILLE — For the second straight weekend, the Wheeling Park boys stood high atop the podium. After winning the Dick Dei Classic on the last event a week ago, the Patriots amassed 192 points to easily outdistance University (135) to win the Monarch Relays Saturday at John Marshall’s sun-splashed Monarch Stadium.

The hosts finished third with 98, while River (72), Tyler Consolidated (67), Preston (49) and Buckeye Local (39) rounded out the field.

BOYS

Although it piled up a large number of points, Wheeling Park used its depth to claim the title as it won just four events.

Christian Bryan edged out teammate Will James to win the 100 on 11.3. They teamed with Isaiah Zelaski and Keohn Stephens to win the 4×100 in 44.45.

Mykel Davis jumped 6-4 to take the high jump and teamed with Stephens, Bryan and James to break the tape in the 4×200.

The host Monarchs had winners in the long jump where Ashton Collett soared 20-7. He also teamed with Brodie Baker, JD Wells and DiMario White to win the 4×110 shuttle hurdles in 1:11.25.

Buckeye Local’s Cai McKeever was a double winner in the 200 and 400 with times of 22.75 and 50.56, respectively.

River’s Wyatt Harlan claimed the 110 hurdles in 17.93. Teammate Clee Mitchell won the 300 hurdles in 44.25.

Tyler Consolidated’s Tristen Tuttle spun the discus 134-10 and Sage Landis cleared the pole vault bar at 12-3.

GIRLS

Wheeling Park was second to University, 184-141, with John Marshall third at 98. Preston (3), Tyler Consolidated (58) and River (39) rounded the field.

The Patriots had a double winner in Kaylee Davis who sprinted to titles in the 100 and 200. She ran a 12.83 to win the 100 and a 26.40 to claim the 200.

Sophie Abraham clocked in at 16.43 to win the 100 hurdles, while Adriana Fazzini won the discus with a toss of 116-8.5. Ellie Reasbeck won the high jump with a leap of 4-10 and tied teammate Hailey Hastings in the pole vault as both went 7-6.

John Marshall’s Sierra Taylor won the 300 hurdles in 49.43 and teamed with Madelyn Cisar, Brielle Bumgardner and Jocelyn Cunningham to win the 4×102.5 hurdles in 1:14.30.

BASEBALL

Linsly 5, Herbert Hoover 4

BRIDGEPORT — The Cadets completed their 3-game sweep as they held off a late charge by the Huskies.

The Scouvart brothers — Jack and Matt — worked the mound for Linsly. Jack got the win with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Mat earned the save with a K and walk in two frames.

Trey Prather singled twice and drove in a run. Jack Selmon and Dillion Wilson each doubled. Jack Scouvart singled in a run, as did his brother.

Wheeling Park 15, St. Albans 0

BRIDGEPORT — Luke Doyle struck out four, walked three and scattered a trio of singles as the Patriots scored at least three runs in four of the five innings.

Wheeling Park belted out 15 hits, 14 singles and a triple.

Tino Nardone had four of those one-base raps and knocked in three runs. Ryan Conard had two singles and a triple that produced four runs and Grant Simons also singled thrice and plated a run. Nathan Bittinger and Braydon Kupsky each singled in two runs.

MIDDLEBOURNE — The Silver Knights (19-4) won a pitcher’s duel to claim the championship.

Reese Davis fired a 2-hitter and struck out six while walking four to earn the shutout.

Jayden Helmick’s RBI single in the bottom of the 5th drove in Carson Gorby with the lone run.

Hurricane Tournament

John Marshall 7, Greenbrier East 4

HURRICANE — Isaac Koontz went the distance on the mound with only one punch out and three walks. She spaced out five hits.

Cain Martin doubled and tripled to drive in two runs for John Marshall (7-10). Jacob Coffield singled, doubled twice and plated a run. Brennan Sobutka drove in two with a single and triple.

Regular Season

Paden City 10, Turkeyfoot, Pa. 0

PADEN CITY — The Wildcats split a doubleheader with the visitors. Jessup Higgins plated two runs with a pair of singles.

Will McGinnis struck out 10, didn’t walk a batter and allowed just two singles in the opener. He also singled twice and doubled.

Liam Clements singled, doubled and knocked in two runs for Paden City (11-7).

Ashton Little fanned 16 and walked one in 6-plus innings, but the hosts couldn’t hold on.

Clements drove in three runs with two singles.

Cameron 14, Paden City 0 (Late Friday)

CAMERON — Adam Angel IV slugged two home runs and drove in five as the Dragons slayed the Wildcats with an 11-run bottom of the first.

Cole Burkett allowed just one hit while fanning 12 and not issuing a free pass. He helped his cause with a single and double that produced a run.

Lance Hartley singled twice, doubled and knocked in a run. Bo O’Neil had a 2-run single and Wes Starcher an RBI triple.

SOFTBALL

Oak Glen Wins Title

GLEN DALE — The Golden Bears routed Clarksburg Liberty 15-0 and then outlasted Morgantown 3-2 in 9 innings Saturday.

John Marshall (16-2) finished third, losing 2-1 to Morgantown in the first game before blanking Clarksburg Liberty 8-0

Paytyn Tucker singled twice and Ava Blake had an RBI for the Monarchs in their opener.

Kaden Pettitt slammed two homers and drove in five runs in the second game. Carlie Keyser drove in a run with two singles and Reese Ward singled twice.

St. Marys 8, Wheeling Central 0

WHEELING — The Maroon Knights (11-3) could only manage three hits in falling to the visiting Blue Devils.

Brook Edge and Josie Frizzell each had a double.

Amy Childers blasted a pair of home runs and a double to account for four runs for St. Marys.
