WHEELING -- Wheeling Post 1 fell 10-9 in the American Legion State Tournament on Thursday to Berkeley County Post 14 in a back-and-forth affair. Post 14 was led by Chase Herndon, who went 3-4 in the game with two doubles, a triple and two RBI. Berkeley County found themselves down in the seventh inning, but scored three runs in the frame to take a 10-8 lead, leaving Wheeling with three outs to score two runs.
Post 1 was able to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout from Andrew Skadra, but couldn't scratch across a second, game-tying run. Wheeling fought back from going down 5-0 in the first inning to take an 8-5 lead in the fourth, but the game swung back once more to Berkeley County in the seventh inning. Post 1's Jackson Murray went 2-3 with two doubles, Dillon Wilson walked three times and scored three runs, and Trey Prather hit a double in the defeat.
With the loss, Wheeling Post 1's season ends with a 30-8 record, and an Area 1 title. With the win, Berkeley County advances to the loser's bracket final of the American Legion State Tournament, where they will play South Charleston at 4 p.m. on Friday.
