HARBOR CREEK, Pa. — Wheeling Central made the more than three-hour trip here a successful one, handing the host Huskies a decisive, 49-20, setback.
The Maroon Knights actually fell behind on the second play from scrimmage when Harbor Creek ripped off a 78-yard touchdown run. From there, however, it was all Wheeling Central. Outside of allowing the half to expire, the Maroon Knights first unit scored on all seven of its possessions.
Junior Braden McWreath had another huge day for the Maroon Knights both running and catching the football. He rushed for three touchdowns covering 13, 39 and 86 yards. He also caught a 37-yarder from classmate Seth Cover. He rushed 13 times for 194 and caught two passes for 40 yards.
J.J. White scored on back-to-back possessions on a screen and shovel pass, respectively. White made the catch and took over from there, scoring on plays of 81 and 75 yards. The first came from Cover and the second came from McWreath.
Isaac Martin put forth another strong effort at running back. He rushed 14 times for 100 yards and scored a touchdown.
Wheeling Central finished with 562 yards of total offense. Of that, 361 came on the ground. The Maroon Knights were also perfect throwing the ball on five tries.
Senior kicker Eli Tucker was a perfect seven-of-seven on PATs. Caleb Golden had an interception for the Knights' defense.
Wheeling Central (5-4) is off this coming week and closes its regular season on Nov. 3 at Williamstown.
Magnolia 33, Ravenswood 6
NEW MARTINSVILLE - It must be something about playing the Red Devils. The Blue Eagles (1-7) hadn't won a game since the season-opener of the 2021 campaign, also against Ravenswood, but that all came to an end Friday night on Alumni Field at Bill Stewart Stadium.
Hunter Oates ran the ball 23 times for 182 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 10 and 20 yards. Matthew Anderson added 111 yards and a pair of TDs - 8 and 2 yards - as Magnolia ran for 311 yards as a team.
Senior lineman Hunter Goddard got into the scoring act with a 2-yard run late in the game. Oates had a 2-point run and Lucas Pena had a PAT.
Ravenswood scored with 8 seconds left to play.
Valley 46, Hundred 22
PINE GROVE - The Lumberjacks' Gavin Derby had a night to remember at Thomas C. West Field.
The senior quarterback ran the ball 20 times for an eye-popping 386 yards and six touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 4, 62, 65, 66, 52 and 10.
Lane Dallison also scored from 5 yards out and finished with 75 yards on 15 attempts.
Cameron 35, Oak Glen 0
CAMERON - Colson Wichterman ran 20 times for 210 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 6 and 64 yards as the Dragons (8-1) overwhelmed the visiting Golden Bears (1-8).
Wichterman also threw for 40 yards and a pair of scores. Mason Scott caught a 13-yarder and Slaton Pettit a 5-yarder.
Klypsan Wallace ran for 136 yards on 28 carries and J. Ross had a 1-yard scoring run. Hunter Wright had three PAT kicks.
Linsly 27, Trinity, Pa. 3
WASHINGTON, PA. - Braden Wade passed for 194 yards and two touchdowns as the Cadets (4-4) got back to the .500 mark.
Wade connected with Malte Feil on scoring tosses of 39 and 77 yards and Neri Weiner ran in from 10 yards out. Rodrigo Ballesteros had a 4-yard scoring run.
Feil, who had three PAT kicks, caught four passes for 134 yards.
Mikey Trollous ran 13 times for 86 yards.
Beallsville 38, Van 8
VAN - The Blue Devils (6-4) kept their hopes alive for a home playoff game next week as Garrett Perkins ran for 128 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard barrier for the season. He had two TD runs.
Marky Louden carried eight times for 61 yards and scored three times while Colton Shriver also had a TD run.
James Palmer charted 10 tackles while Shriver and Reed Smith each logged nine tackles and each recovered a fumble.
River 42, Frontier 16
BEAVERTON – River high tuned for another run at a Region 27 title beginning next week by taking care of business early, and to the delight of Pilot faithful, often.
Veteran coach Mike Flannery was presented his 200th career win by a seasoned crew of Rivermen as the 7-2 record Hannibal club scored on its first four drives to build a 42-0 halftime cushion.
River, which reached the Division VII Region final a year ago as a No. 2 seed, could face either Sciotoville, Rosecrans or Bridgeport as the Pilots figure to be a 4-5 seed depending on Saturday's results.
Flannery made it 12 straight over the Cougars as quarterback Kabel Isaly played only the first half and threw for 307 yards and three scores on 11-of-15, including a pair of 70-yard TD bombs to seniors Maddox Mozena and Colton Cisar, while the senior all-Ohio returnee ran 38 yards for another TD.
Flannery also commended the effort in the trenches by seniors Matthew Gregg, Zeke Zola, Cooper Cordery and Hunter Nething.
River forced a punt on the opening series and marched 75 yards in seven plays as Johnson and Bowers chewed up infantry yards, while Isaly connected with Bowers for 20, eight, and a 12-yards TD catch at 6:32. Sophomore Wyatt Majors drilled the PAT for a 7-0 count.
Bowers pulled in a 43 yard catch to the hosts' 17, and after Johnson picked up six, he bulled his way the final 11 for the TD. At 3:26 Majors added the kick for a 14-0 spread.
Junior Lucas Dennis' leaping interception at his 30 set up the next Pilot TD seconds later when the Isaly-to-Cisar combination completed a 70-yard aerial score. The PAT at 14:39 of the second made it 28-0.
The fireworks weren't over for the Rivermen as Isaly used a nice fake inside to his fullback and kept around end for a 38 yard TD run with 4:20 before the half. Majors added the kick for a 35-0 lead.
The ensuing kickoff was mis-hit by the RHS placekicker and barely rolled far enough, but a scramble saw the Pilots recover at the Cougar 49. Six plays later it was 42-0.
Steubenville 41, Louisville 8
LOUSIVILLE -- Hall of Fame Big Red head coach Reno Saccoccia said earlier in the week he wanted his team focused on closing the regular season strong -- and they did just that.
Steubenville, which entered the week having locked up a home playoff game, leading the Division IV, Region 15 rankings and ranked No. 3 in the latest AP Poll, rolled to a 41-8 victory on the road at Division III Lousiville Friday night to finish the regular season 9-1.
Big Red has now won nine-straight with the victory over the Leopards and, according to Joe Eitel, locked up the No. 1 seed in the region with the victory.
Big Red opened the scoring with a Lee-Anthony Sewell touchdown run of 9 yards for a 7-0 lead, then Aydan Manning and Isaac Hill connected for back-to-back scores to quickly put Big Red in control.
The first scoring strike was a 26-yarder to make it 14-0 after one quarter, then the second went for 51 yards early in the second quarter to make it 21-0.
Savier Faulks (5-yard run) and Ca’Juan Bryant (10-yard run) added scoring runs before the break to make it 35-0 Steubenville at the break.
Kail Simmons broke a 77-yard scoring run in the second half to make it 41-0 Big Red before the hosts got on the board early in the fourth quarter.
Big Red’s opponent for the first round of the playoffs will be announced on Sunday. Eitel’s rankings unofficially had it narrowed down to McConnellsville Morgan or Carrollton, pending results on Saturday that could affect the final totals.
Weir 47, East Liverpool 12
WEIRTON -- The Red Riders got another big win, their fifth-straight, by topping visiting East Liverpool Friday night at Jimmy Carey Stadium, 47-12.
Coach Frank Sisinni’s club, according to WVTailgateCentral, moved into the No. 4 spot in the Class AA rankings after improving to 8-1.
East Liverpool wrapped up coach Paul Cusick's first regular season in charge with a 6-4 record. The Potters still have life as the team appeared to have qualified for the Ohio Div. IV, Region 13 playoffs, according to Joe Eitel.
Weir showed why it is enjoying a successful season as it went out to a 27-6 lead at the half and never looked back.
A short 1-yard run by Corey Lyons put Weir High on the board with 1:40 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0. The action really heated up in the second quarter as quarterback Malachi Stromile hit a 30-yard touchdown pass strike to extend the lead to 14-0 with 7:12 left in the second quarter.
East Liverpool got on the board with a Trent Davis 1-yard touchdown run with 5:20 left in the second quarter, but Weir's Stromile hit Devan Colson on a 49-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-6 with 4:15 left until the break. Stromile threw his third touchdown pass with 25 seconds left in the half to make it a runaway at 27-6.
Lyons opened Weir's scoring in the second half with a 4-yard touchdown run with 6:29 left in the third quarter to push it to 33-6.
Ben Myers threw a 20-yard touchdown to Dorian Burchett in the fourth quarter for the Potters only score of the second half.
Colson capped Weir's scoring with an 85-yard kickoff return with 6:19 left in the game.
Stromile ended up 8 of 9 for 192 yards and four touchdowns.
East Liverpool quarterback Gavin Wright was 12 of 20 for 126 yards and an interception.
East Liverpool's Jaymin Haney rushed for 98 yards on 16 carries.
Lyons led Weir High on the ground with 20 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns.
Blake Adkins caught six balls for 52 yards for the Potters. D'Shawn Kirby had four catches for 42 yards, while Quintin Conrad had four catches for 35 yards. Burchett had two catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Weir outgained the Potters 407-282.
Weir will host rival Brooke next Friday in its regular season finale.
