Local Roundup: Red Devils’ Baker Advances To States

By Staff Reports 2 min read

CAMBRIDGE–Olivia Baker is heading back to Columbus.

The St. Clairsville sophomore tied for medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73 round at the Cambridge Country Club to win the Division II Girls District Championship.

She tied with Garaway senior Hannah Steiner at 73, edging Carrollton's Ashlee Garner by one stroke.

Baker's scorecard came in four strokes less than her 2022 effort at Cambridge (77) that sent her to Columbus. Clifford called it her most clutch round--and hole--of the season.

"She played well last year, but to shoot a 73 when she had to, it was impressive," Clifford said. "It was certainly her most clutch round. There are a lot of good girls in the Eastern district. Garaway as a team shot 300."

Garaway's Sammi Miller, the 2022 district medalist, finished fourth at 75.

Both Danielle Lude and Julia Hancock represented Martins Ferry on Wednesday. Lude, in her first and only season of high school golf, finished in a tie for 20th at 93, while Hancock, who qualified for districts after narrowly missing as a sophomore, came in 23rd with a 98.

The pair advanced to districts after a sectional performance where Lude finished tied for 11th and Hancock finished tied for 13th.

The district championship pushes the top team, plus the top individual qualifier to the state tournament. The Garaway Pirates took team honors after all five Pirates' golfers finished in the Top 7.
