Local Roundup: Doan Ford-Barnesville Invitational Kicks Off, Wheeling Park Tops Huntington

BARNESVILLE - The 54th annual Doan Ford-Barnesville Invitational wrestling tournament kicked off Friday and 29 OVAC matmen have advanced into today's championship semifinals.

Leading the way is host Barnesville with 10. Wheeling Park has six and Union Local four. Harrison Central, Indian Creek and John Marshall all have three.

The Shamrocks semifinalists are Easton Stephen (106), Ayden Andrews (126), Colt Carpenter (132), Dakota King (138), Jonathan Foster (144), Reese Stephen (150), Skyler King (157), Ayden King (165), Hines Ford (175) and Christien Hannahs (215).

Foster won by default over Wheeling Park's top-seeded Jack Lowe.

Patriots still alive for a title are Adam Carman (138), Noah White (150), Isaac Sands (157), Jameson Maynard (175), Malachi Washington (190) and Hunter Means (285).

The Jets still in the championship bracket include Cole Rogers (106), Gavin Bolock (113), Gunnar Gossett (144) and Brody Perzanowski (157).

The Redskins winners were Ian Starkey (132), Gavin Pownall (157) and Luke McMillan.

Still alive for a title for the Huskies are Hunter Bittinger (175), Lucas Thomas (215) and Landen Thomas (285).

Monarchs remaining in the championship bracket are Carter Adkins (132), Waylon Wyckoff (144) and Maverick Lemasters (190).

Action continues throughout Saturday, with the championship finals set for approximately 4:30 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wheeling Park 66, Huntington 61

INSTITUTE - The Patriots stormed back from a 50-42 deficit after three quarters to outscore the Highlanders 24-11 in the final quarter in a game played at West Virginia State University.

Junior Aiden Davis pumped in a game-high 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Wheeling Park. He also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Amare Johnson contributed 13 points and Mykel Davis finished with 10 points and nine boards.

Josh Huffman had seven points off the bench. Huntington had no bench points.

Bridgeport 56, Edison 49

RICHMOND - The Bulldogs (4-2) won for the second time in as many nights as they rallied past the host Wildcats inside the Edison Fieldhouse.

Edison led by three entering the fourth quarter, but Bridgeport got hot from beyond the three-point arc.

Freshman Jaleel Vincent continued his fine play with a game-high 21 points, which included five trifectas. Avery Jackson and Coen Brinker had 12 each.

JD Henderson led Edison with 16 points, one more than Kyle Long.

Madonna 65, Steubenville Catholic 63

WEIRTON -- Luca Muzzi hit a buzzer-beating midcourt heave to put the Blue Dons overtop the Crusaders on Friday.

Muzzi, a senior, finished with a game-high 22 points.

Benji Rook scored 19 for the Crusaders while Evan Long scored 16.

Buckeye Trail 65, Shadyside 58

SHADYSIDE - Senior Ben Wach scored a game-high 27 points and Tyler Stottlemyer knocked down six treys, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell short.

Cambridge 49, Indian Creek 45

WINTERSVILLE - The Redskins late rally came up shy of its mark as the Bobcats (1-3) stopped a season-opening three-game losing streak on Coach 'D' Court inside Indian Creek High School.

Drake Freshwater had eight points to lead Indian Creek.

Brooke 79, Oak Glen 62

NEW CUMBERLAND - Garrett Milam racked up 29 points in the Bruins win, while teammate Leyton Toepfer finished with 22 points and 13 assists. Nick Cipoletti (12) and Nathaniel Kimball (12) also finished in double figures. Gage Yost grabbed 11 rebounds for Brooke.

Clay-Battelle 91, Hundred 35

Trey Huggins scored 17 points and Brayden Bartrug added 10 for the Hornets.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Spring Valley 73, Cameron 55

CAMERON - Maci Neely made five 3-pointers on her way to a 25-point night for the Dragons, but it was not enough as the Timberwolves got 22 points from Sophi Hutchison and 20 from Brooklyn Ellis to score a road win.

Ashlynn Van Tassell scored 20 for Cameron, her and Neely combining for 45 of Cameron's 55 points.

WELLSBURG - The Bruins dropped a 2,098 to 1,990 match to the Tigers.

Dawson Paugh rolled a 198 game and Dakota McMillan had a 185 and 339 series.

John Marshall Noses Out South

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The host Monarchs nipped the Patriots, 1,556 to 1,550 as Reagan Gorby rolled a 159 game and a 287 series. Shelby Crow had a 153 game and Ash Browning a 284 series.
