Wheeling University Hosts Youths For Elks Hoop Shoot Contest

Third, second and first-place winners pose with their trophies at Saturday’s Elks Hoop Shoot Contest sponsored by Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28.

Eighteen girls and boys were recently awarded trophies in the Elks Hoop Shoot Contest sponsored by Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28. The contest was held on January 6, 2024 at Wheeling University. The contest included participants from public and private schools in both Marshall County and Ohio County.

Last year's Elks National Contest winner and Wheeling native Morgan Miehle made an appearance the day of the event to address the fledgling hoopers.

In the front row pictured above/below, third place winners included, from left to right, Arya Ripley, girls 8-9 division; Bristol Knight, girls 10-11 division; Kaileann Swartz, girls 12-13 division; Jackson Bell, boys 12-13 division; Jaxon Burge, boys 10-11 division; and Easton Gessler, boys 8-9 division.

In the middle row, second place winners included, from left to right, Giana Cook, girls 8-9 division; Gianna White, girls 10-11 division; Hailey Driscoll, girls 12-13 division; Dylan Blatt, boys 12-13 division; Garrison Gessler, boys 10-11 division; and Pace Pettit, boys 8-9 division.

In the back row, the first-place champions included, from left to right, Keara Creighton, girls 8-9 division; Taylor Himmelrick, girls 10-11 division; Riley Himmelrick, girls 12-13 division; Brazen Smith, boys 12-13 division; Roman Shinsky, boys 10-11 division; and Ryker Mueller, boys 8-9 division.

Each of the six overall champions will advance to the Elks Northern District Hoop Shoot Contest to be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 at St. Mary's High School in St. Mary's, West Virginia. The Elks Hoop Shoot is a national free-throw shooting contest for girls and boys ages 8-13. This year alone, nearly four million youths are expected to compete nationwide.
