Shadyside’s Nathan Booth, left, sails over the final hurdle to set a regional, district and school record in winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.38 seconds Friday in the Ohio Division III Region 11 Track and Field meet at Heath High School. He nipped Shenandoah’s Braxton Barnett who ran 14.58. Booth’s brother, Dylan finished third in 15.24. All three qualified for next week’s state meet in Dayton.

HEATH – Only four local athletes were able to place in the top four of their respective events Friday and advance to the Ohio Division III state track and field championships next weekend at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. A fifth qualified on Wednesday during the first day of action in the Region 11 meet at Heath High School.

Half of that total belongs to Shadyside in the form of the Booth brothers – seniors Nathan and Dylan. The other two are Bellaire’s Alyson Vingia and Steubenville Catholic’s Andrew Rohde.

Nathan Booth set a Region 11, Eastern District and Shadyside school record when he clocked in at 14.38 seconds to win the 110-meter high hurdles. That was a mere two-tenths of a second better than Shenandoah sophomore Braxton Barnett. Dylan ran third in 15.24.

“I didn’t get the best start and I hit a few hurdles, but I was still able to get first,” Nathan said. “I just ran a little faster.

“It feels good to be able to go with my brother again,” he added. “He’s had a bad back all year. I’m glad he qualified.”

The old regional record was 14.39 set in 2013 by North Robinson Colonel Crawford’s Keith Martin. Barnett was the top qualifier with a time of 15.22, with Dylan Booth second at 15.77 and Nathan at 15.80.

The race was just the fourth for Dylan due to back problems.

“It’s pretty cool. It’s satisfying to be able to qualify in just my fourth race,” Dylan noted. “I’m hurting a lot but pushing through it. I’m glad I’ve got another week of racing.”

Both are repeat state qualifiers, with Nathan placing 11th last spring. That was motivation for him.

“I want to get on the podium this year. I don’t want to finish 11th again.”

VINGIA qualified on her second throw in the ‘B’ flight. The sophomore fouled on her first attempt and then threw a 121-feet, 10-inches on her third try. In the finals, she went 105-6 and 121-6. Vingia was 10th in the shot put at 33-3.75.

“She, like the Booths, is a returning state qualifier.

“Being surrounded by great competitors and knowing what you had to throw really helped me today,” Vingia said. “I also worked really hard in my practices leading up to this.”

Her personal best is around 133, but she admitted to having an “off week.

“It’s pretty nice to have an off day and still finish second,” she said.

ROHDE won the boys’ 1600-meter run in 4-minutes, 17.02 seconds. That was also a regional record, breaking the mark of 4:18.35 set by Caldwell’s Brian Norris back in 1988. Rohde also placed sixth in the 3200 in 9:43.15.

The fifth state qualifier is Martins Ferry’s Carter Bennett. The senior school-record holder soared 13-8 in the pole vault to finish third.

Shadyside junior Mia Boatman-Salas also placed sixth in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in 49.55. Freshman teammate Chloe Meholovitch was eighth in the 1600 with a time of 5:34.05.

The River girls’ 4×100-meter relay finished seventh in 44.71.

The Zeps’ Barnett was a four-time state qualifier as he won the high jump (6-4) and 300-meter low hurdles (39.74) while taking fourth in the long jump (21-7.25).

Caldwell’s Gwyn Lori (girls) and Ethan Crock (boys) both advanced in the disc as Lori spun it 141-6 to win and Crock went 148-6 to finish third. Lori won the shot put with a heave of 46-10, also a new regional record.

Starting at $2.99/week.
