MARTINSBURG - One area team stayed alive Friday, while another was eliminated from the West Virginia American Legion State Baseball Tournament in Martinsburg during the second day of games in the double-elimination tourney.
WHEELING POST 1 7, POTOMAC VALLEY POST 64 4
The offense waited until extra innings Friday, with Post 1 breaking a 2-2 tie going into the eighth inning with a five-run outburst. Wheeling held off a Post 64 counterattack to secure the win.
Alex Taylor racked up three hits for Post 1, while Dillon Wilson tallied two hits and three RBI to lead the team. Both players smacked doubles on the day.
Quinn Jamison pitched 6.2 innings, striking out six and allowing one earned run. Ryland Robb picked up the win in relief, finishing off the game.
Zade Billings, Andrew Skadra, Jared Marsh and Preston Cole each knocked in a run.
Each team tallied eight hits Friday.
Wheeling Post 1 will face the loser South Charleston vs. Morgantown, not yet concluded at time of writing.
BERKELEY POST 14 4, WELLSBURG POST 34 1
Wellsburg's trip to states ended Friday against Berkeley. Post 14 put two runs on the board in the second inning, and though Wellsburg's Brayden McFarland came in to score and put Post 34 on the board in the third inning, it'd be all Berkeley from there.
TJ Decapio, Matt Geer, Raymond DeFranco and McFarland all tallied hits for Wellsburg.
Hunter Mozingo took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings. Geer finished out the game, striking out a pair in 1.1 innings.
