Cameron Slays Doddridge Co. In Class A Quarterfinal, 28-13
Offense Scores 4 TDs, Defense Gets 4 Turnovers
CAMERON – Cameron scored four offensive touchdowns Friday night and the defense forced four turnovers as the No. 4 Dragons led wire-to-wire in a W.Va. Class A quarterfinal playoff victory, 28-13, over Doddridge County at snowy Dragon Field.
With the cherished victory, Cameron (11-1) punched its ticket to the semifinal round against the winner of today’s 4 o’clock clash between No. 1 Tug Valley (11-0) and No. 8 Petersburg (6-5). If Tug Valley prevails, the Dragons will be on the road. However, if Petersburg wins, the Dragons will remain at home.
“That would be nice,” Cameron head coach Tim Brown said with a smile, “but if we have to go on the road, we’ll travel wherever.
“These kids keep on coming. They won’t give up,” Brown added. “This will be our third time in the Final Four. We were there in 1990 and 2000.”
The No. 5 Bulldogs (9-3) won the opening coin toss and deferred until the second half. Cameron took the ball and drove 60 yards on 11 plays – 10 runs – as senior tailback Klypsan Wallace capped the early march when he bounced outside on an 18-yard jaunt around left end with 6-minutes, 24-seconds left in the first quarter.
The PAT was no good.
On the second play of the second quarter, Cameron’s Griffen Miller hit Doddridge County quarterback Brysen Dixon, forcing a fumble that the Dragons’ Wes Starcher pounced at the visitors’ 46.
“(Defensive coordinator) Coach (Derek) Martin does a good job of putting athletes along that defensive line and some of these young kids are really making plays. They’ve got a lot of quickness, but they are deceptively strong because we spend a lot of time in the weight room.”
Nine plays and 56 yards later, Cameron added to its lead. On second-and-14 from the Doddridge County 20, quarterback Kason Angel stepped up in the pocket and, with a defender draped around his ankles, the senior lofted the ball towards the goal line where classmate Mason Scott made an acrobatic one-handed catch as he fell into the end zone. Angel then swept around the left end for the two points and a 14-0 advantage with 5:59 left in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard when Lyric Blake found the end zone from a yard out with 4:10 on the clock. The scoring drive was aided by a 37-yard strike from Dixon to Aiden James and a 18-yard hookup from Dixon to Landon Thomas. James booted the point-after.
Slaton Pettit put the Dragons in scoring position when he intercepted a Dixon pass on the fourth play of the third quarter. Cameron would go 54 yards on eight plays, with Pettit galloping the final 34. The PAT failed, leaving the hosts on top, 20-7.
On Doddridge County’s ensuing snap. Cameron linebacker Carter Paczewski made a diving interception.
Scott got into the air piracy when he picked off a Dixon pass three plays into the fourth quarter.
Cameron responded with an 8-play, 55-yard march as Angel found Pettit in the left corner of the end zone from 23 yards out. Wallace ran for the two points and a 28-7 advantage.
The Bulldogs sliced into the deficit when backup quarterback Evan Cross and Brandon Davis clicked on a 67-yard screen pass.
Cameron ran the ball 50 times for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Wallace led the way with 93 stripes on 29 carries, while Angel chipped in 66 and Pettit 60. Angel completed half of his 10 pass attempts for 60 yards and the two scores. Pettit caught three balls for 27 yards.
“Those guys up front keep getting better and better with each game,” Brown said of the offensive line. “Coaches Davidson and Rogers do a great job of getting them prepared.”
Dixon was 8-of-16 for 108 yards, but the Bulldogs couldn’t get any running game going on the snow-covered artificial surface. They had 78 yards on 18 carries.
Penalties haunted Doddridge County as it was flagged eight times for 110 yards. Six of those flags were 15-yarders.
