WINTERSVILLE – The Indian Creek and Wheeling Park girls' basketball teams feature two of the top guards in the Ohio Valley in the Redskins' McKenna Scott and the Patriots' Alexis Bordas.
Indian Creek led early, and two free throws gave the Redskins a 7-6 lead with 2:08 left in the first quarter, however, the rest of the game belonged to the Patriots as Wheeling park doubled Indian Creek, 62-31, in a varsity-only game Wednesday night on Coach D Court.
"We cut the lead to six early in the second half, and that was good," Indian Creek (5-3) head coach Steve Eft said. "It was a tough ask. We had five girls. I liked how we played. We gave a great effort. I'm proud of the girls. We ran out of the gas in the second half. They executed better in the second half."
The Patriots led 26-15 at halftime and 46-26 at the end of the third.
"Indian Creek had a good gameplan," Wheeling Park (5-1) head coach Ryan Young said. "No. 1 (Kaydence Walker) and No. 2 (Scott) do a good job in space. They made it difficult for us to stay in front of them. No. 2 is very good. She made it hard on us. We started to do a better job with our help defense.
"We were coming off a big win last night against Morgantown. It was an emotional win. It was kind of expected of us to get off to a bit of a slow start. Tonight was a battle."
Scott, who recently eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her career, and Cam Ketron each scored eight points to lead the way offensively for the hosts.
"She can change direction really well," Young said. "She can take you off the ball on both sides. She's a really good player."
On the other side, Bordas reached a milestone as the senior standout eclipsed the 2,000 point mark for her career.
"It is an amazing accomplishment," Young said. "She deserves it. She puts in a lot of work. She is the first kid at Wheeling Park to score 2,000 points. She's a special player. She works really hard. She deserves it. You are always happy when someone like her achieves something like this."
Bordas reached the milestone when she hit a 3-pointer to give the girls from Ohio County a 44-24 lead with 2:16 left in the third. The game was briefly stopped while her achievement was recognized by Indian Creek.
"That's a lot of points," Eft said. "She's a heck of a player. She works hard. I want to congratulate her for that. I want to wish her the best of luck going forward. It was a tough ask tonight."
Bordas delivered a game-high 30 points to lead the way offensively for the visitors, while Karringtyn Miller and Maggie Hupp each tallied nine points.
The victors outscored the Red-and-Gold, 16-5, in the fourth to account for the final score.
"She's a great player," Eft said about Bordas. "She has other players around her who can score. They have other girls who can shoot. If you focus on her, they have other girls who can hurt you.
"Tonight was a tough ask. We were shorthanded. We battled for two-and-a-half quarters, but the game got away from us in the third. They made some shots, and we had some empty possessions and things snowballed from there."
The Patriots made 11 3-pointers on the night, while the girls in white made one.
Indian Creek is scheduled to play Wheeling Central at noon Saturday at the Buckeye 8 Challenge.
"There's no rest for the weary," Eft said. "We practice tomorrow. We have to get ready for Wheeling Central."
Wheeling Park is slated to play Fairland Dec. 28 down at Marietta College.
