WEIRTON – Rayna Hoover had a night to remember.
Hoover recorded a single-game record 43 points leading the Weir girls' basketball team to a 69-38 victory against rival Brooke Monday night on Ron "Fritz" Williams Court inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
Hoover broke the old record of 41 set by Raegan Stead back in 2015.
Hoover also surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career earlier this season.
Hoover finished the game with 16 2-pointers and two 3-pointers, while going 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. The senior standout tallied 24 points in the first before tallying 19 more in the second.
Faulks finished with 13 points for Weir.
Marionna Dipaolo and Rilyn Bowman each delivered 13 points for Brooke.
The Red-and-Black led 24-4 at the end of the first quarter before taking a 38-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. The victors led 54-28 entering the fourth. The hosts netted the first nine points of the fourth to build a 63-28 advantage.
The victory enabled the Red Riders to sweep the season series from the Bruins. Weir defeated Brooke, 60-13, back on Dec. 5 on the road inside the Brooke Wellness Center. Weir and Brooke are back in the same section this season.
Brooke is scheduled to play John Marshall Wednesday night at home. It will be the first meeting this season between the Bruins and the Monarchs.
Weir is slated to play Wheeling Central Thursday night on the road. The Maroon Knights defeated the Red Riders, 79-71, Dec. 19 on the road in the two team's first meeting this season.
Cameron 64, Clay-Battelle 30
CAMERON - The Cameron Dragons blew past the Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees at home Monday as Maci Neely had a points-steals double-double to lead her team.
Neely tallied 23 points and 10 steals, knocking down three 3-pointers for Cameron. Sleigh Littleton scored 11. Devan Schrack had six points and seven rebounds, while Bianca Bianca Marongiu had four points and nine rebounds.
Ali Hellyer led Clay-Battelle with 15 points.
The Dragons are hitting the road for their final two games of the regular season, next heading to Hundred on Wednesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Steubenville 70, ISA 30
STEUBENVILLE -- Two days removed from a frustrating loss in the OVAC Championship on Saturday, Big Red took out some of those frustrations in a hurry against the visiting International Sports Academy team out of Sandusky in their regular season finale, scoring 35 first quarter points on the way to a 70-30 victory.
Big Red started on fire, holding a 35-2 lead after one quarter and leading 51-8 at halftime. Steubenville, which finishes the regular season portion of its schedule with a strong mark of 18-3, got its shooting back on track, hitting nearly 70 percent from two and better than 40 percent on 3s. They hit 10 shots from beyond the arc.
Of the 10 triples, Big Red hit seven of them in the opening eight minutes. Aiden Davis, who led Big Red with 16 points, swished three of his four triples in the first quarter.
Big Red got every player dressed into the game, 10 different players contributing to the scoring totals.
In addition to Davis, Will Taylor tallied 13 points while Santino Haney and Tre'Von Wiggins each netted 12 points. JoJo Rea had a team-high eight rebounds.
Big Red will now turn its focus to Friday night's tournament opener. Steubenville is the top seed in the Division III, East District field and will host third-seeded New Philadelphia with the opening tip set for 6 p.m.
Steubenville Catholic 79, Madonna 42
WEIRTON -- While the Crusaders did not get off to their best start and made some mistakes early, they got dialed in and pulled away from a young Blue Dons squad for a 79-42 victory inside the Dube Dome.
After the Dons (6-13) knotted the score at six-all midway through the first quarter, the Crusaders (19-3) closed the opening quarter on a 12-1 run. In the second, after Madonna had started to match bucket for bucket and was keeping up, Central again went on a run, this time 9-0, to lead 39-21 at the break.
Central was led by a 25-point day from Camden Bradley, while Rahim Mitchell tallied 16 points and Benji Rook netted 12.
For Madonna, Connor Carte had a strong day netting 21 points.
The Crusaders are now on to the Division VII, East District tournament, in which they are the top seed. They open their run by hosting fourth-seeded Strasburg at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
