High School Roundup: A Dozen Advance To Wrestling District Semifinal; Cameron And John Marshall Girls Win First-Round Playoff Games

COSHOCTON – Twelve local wrestlers have reached the championship semifinals in the Ohio Division III Eastern District Tournament inside the Wigwam at Coshocton High School on Friday.

Action resumes at 9 a.m. today with first-round consolation bouts. Championship semifinal action begins at noon, with the championship finals set for approximately 4:30 p.m.

Barnesville, which sits in third place with 48 points, has a trio of semifinalists in Colt Carpenter (138), Ayden King (165) and Hines Ford (175). Each won with a pair of pins, with Ford needing just 54 seconds in one match.

Union Local, which finds itself fifth place with 29.5, Bridgeport, Harrison Central and Martins Ferry all advance two each to the semis. Toronto has one.

The Jets’ Gunnar Gossett (144) and Brody Perzanowski (175) each won twice, with Perzanowski recording pins in 32 and 52 seconds.

The Bulldogs’ Robert Weekley (120) and Ax’Zavior (132) each prevailed twice, with Santana having two pins.

The Huskies’ Knox McKibben (215) and Landen Thomas (285) advanced to the semifinals. McKibben had a 13-second pin and a 11-0 major decision. Thomas had two pins.

The Purple Riders’ Colton Nixon (126) and Tayson Palmer (215) also won twice each.

The Red Knights’ Heath Thomas (285) won by pin in overtime and by a 1-0 decision.

Apple Creek Waynedale, which won the Wheeling Park Duals in December, piled up 114.5 points to lead the way.

In Division II action at the Crimson Center at Steubenville High School, Big Red sent four individuals to the semifinals, while Indian Creek has a pair.

Defending state champion Brody Saccoccia (157) earned a pair of technical falls, while Cooper Smith (144) had two pins, one in 39 ticks. Ethan Llewellyn (165) and Beau Hudson (285) also won twice, with Llewellyn recording two pins and Hudson scoring a 3-2 decision and a 3-1 nod in an ultimate tiebreaker.

The Redskins in the semifinals are Gavin Pownall (165) and Luke McMillion (190). Pownall won by 2-1 ultimate tiebreaker and a 4-3 decision.

The top four in each weight class advance to the state tournament next weekend at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WVSSAC Class A Region 1

Cameron 63, Wood County Christian 34

CAMERON – The Dragons are headed to the regional co-finals after a decisive victory over the Wildcats.

Maci Neely led all scorers with 22 points. Kendra Thomas made four 3-pointers to end with 12 points and six steals. Macey Bertram had nine points and six steals.

The Dragons will face Trinity Christian on Wednesday, March 5 with a spot in the state tournament on the line.

WVSSAC Class AAAA Region 1

John Marshall 69, Buckhannon-Upshur 46

MOUNDSVILLE – Rilee Storm poured in 27 points to lead the Monarchs to a commanding win over the visiting Buccaneers inside the John Marshall Field House. Kalyn Reese chipped in 11 points while Masyn Inclan added 10.

John Marshall visits Morgantown on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wheeling Central 67, Chapmanville 66

WHEELING – The Maroon Knights rallied from a first-half deficit of as much as 17 points to defeat the Tigers and move to 19-2 on the season.

Eli Sancomb scored 29 and Eli Dean scored 25 to fuel Wheeling Central.

The Knights trailed 38-31 at halftime and 57-47 after three quarters.

Wheeling Central hosts Notre Dame on Saturday for their senior day game.
